The duo Kal Penn and John Cho are back to their first love with Harold & Kumar 4. This fourth installment will actually happen, and Kal Penn would like to imitate Tom Cruise and take his film into space.
Harold and Kumar: a cult saga?
In 2004 the duo John Cho and Kal Penn created a new stoner movie.Inspired by Cheech and Chong's recipe, the two actors sign a reference of the kind: Harold & Kumar hunt the burger. Directed by Danny Leiner, the feature film grossed almost $24 million on a budget of $9 million. The film became a reference for lovers of comedies, and spawned two sequels, respectively released in 2008 and 2011. Through Harold and Kumar chase the burger, the two friends go in search of a mysterious white castle. An adventure full of adventures that will take them to meet Neil Patrick Harris. The latter will return in the other two episodes. In 2008 Harold and Kumar escaped from Guantanamo met with even greater success with more than 43 million dollars in revenue against a budget of 12 million. The public is still at the rendezvous and does not sulk its pleasure. Finally, in 2011, they repiled one last time with Harold's Merry Christmas and Kumar with Neil Patrick Harris as Santa Claus. The feature film has a turnover of more than $36 million on a budget of around $20 million.
A fourth episode
It's been a while since Kal Penn wanted to offer a fourth adventure to Harold and Kumar. According to him, the project is progressing since it has already obtained the green light from Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who wrote the three previous films. The subject of this fourth episode is still unclear, but it seems that Kal Penn has some ideas. In a recent interview with Uproxx, the comedian stressed that he wants Harold and Kumar 4 to take place in space. He revealed that he was interested in a space set, saying:
"Oh man, look, all my tattoos are related to astronomy, so I kind of like the idea of going to the space station."
But the implementation of this new film seems tedious, and takes longer than expected, as Kal Penn reminds us:
"It's a bit tricky for the planning of the movie because the guys who created the franchise are right now on the Cobra Kai show. John Cho is in New Zealand to make a film. And I'm about to start Clarice, the remake of The Silence of the Lambs. We're constantly talking about this fourth film, we just have to find the right moment."
Thus, Harold and Kumar 4 runs into scheduling problems. The filming of the Clarice series should take some time for Kal Penn. In any case, his idea of sending his characters into space is not stupid. A starting premise conducive to some good comic springs. Parachuting these two fools into space could result in a succession of hilarious gags. And we hope that all this small troupe will manage to come together to offer Harold and Kumar a new lap of the track.
