New week, new films on display. From Gueule d'Ange presented in Cannes, to the Starry Sky above my Head or until Mother's Day, this Wednesday's cinema releases vary in all kinds, to please young and old. To your notebooks!

Mother's Day

Dramatic comedy directedby Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, with Audrey Fleurot, Clotilde Courau, Olivia Côte, Pascale Arbillot, Jeanne Rosa, Carmen Maura, Nicole Garcia, Marie-Christine Barrault, Pascal Demolon, and Noémie Merlant.

Synopsis: They are President of the Republic, nanny, baker, actress, teacher, florist, journalist, unemployed, pediatrician. They are possessive, benevolent, clumsy, absent, omnipresent, overwhelmed, guilty, indulgent, loving, fragile, in full possession of their means or losing their minds. Alive or already a memory … Son or daughter, we remain whatever happens their child with the desire that they let go of us and the fear that they leave us. And then we become moms… and it's going to be our party!


Children's Brains

Documentary directedby Stéphanie Brillant.

Synopsis: Children's Brains is a dive into neuroscience and explains how our childhood experiences shape our brains. The film gives the essential keys to develop it properly. How to help children better manage their anger, recover from failures, learn effectively, etc. From emotion to learning, the film presents everything you need to know, as a parent or educator, to support children in reaching their full potential and helping them thrive.


Mutafukaz

Animated film directed by Shōjirō Nishimi and Run.

Angelino is a young loser among many others in Dark Meat City, a ruthless megalopolis under the California sun. During the day, he delivers pizza to every corner of the city; and at night, he squats in a shabby hotel room with his roommate Vinz and an armada of cockroaches that are now a bit of a part of his family. Following a scooter accident when his path inadvertently crossed with the divine Luna, a jet black haired girl, our young lascar begins to suffer from headaches and strange hallucinations. Hallucinations, you said? Hmm, maybe not… Hunted by men in black, Angelino no longer has any doubt: he is being targeted. But why him?

Manifesto

Drama directed by Julian Rosefeldt, starring Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton.

Synopsis: Manifesto brings together Futurist, Dadaist and Situationist manifestos as well as the thoughts of artists, architects, dancers and filmmakers such as Sol LeWitt, Yvonne Rainer or Jim Jarmusch. Through 13 characters including a primary school teacher, a television news presenter, a worker, a tramp… Cate Blanchett chants these composite manifestos to test the meaning of these historical texts in our contemporary world.


The Starry Sky Above My Head

Comedy directed by Ilan Klipper, with Laurent Poitrenaux, Camille Chamoux, Marilyne Canto, Alma Jodorowsky, Michèle Moretti, François Chattot, and Frank Williams.

Synopsis: Bruno published a fiery first novel in 1996. The headline was in the press: "There is a before and after The Starry Sky above my head ." Twenty years later, Bruno is 50 years old. He is single, has no children, and lives with a young Femen. He gets up at 2pm and spends most of his days in underpants looking for inspiration. For him everything is fine, but his relatives are worried…


Quiet People, a day in Zagreb

Drama directed by Ognjen Svilicic, starring Emir Hadzihafizbegovic, Jasna Zalica, Ljubomir Bandovic, Mira Banjac, Goran Bogdan, Ana Begic, Daria Lorenci, Niksa Butijer, and Stjepan Peric.

Ivo and Maja live a peaceful life with Tomitza, their son, in a suburb of Zagreb. One night, Tomitza is violently assaulted and seriously injured by another boy. The world is falling apart. Then begins a quest in the hospital environment. The ordeal they are going through forces them to re-examine their lives and question all their certainties.


Solo: A Star Wars Story

Science fiction film directed by Ron Howard, starring Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Paul Bettany, John Tui, Warwick Davis, and Hal Fowler.

The film was screened out of competition at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

Synopsis: Board the Millennium Falcon and go on an adventure with the most famous scoundrel in the galaxy. During perilous adventures in the depths of a criminal world, Han Solo will meet his imposing future co-pilot Chewbacca, and cross paths with the charming con man Lando Calrissian… This initiatory journey will reveal the personality of one of the most striking heroes of the Star Wars saga.

Hubert Reeves, the Earth seen from the Heart

Documentary directed by Iolande Cadrin-Rossignol.

Synopsis: Around Hubert Reeves and Frédéric Lenoir, scientists, authors, and artists challenge us: biodiversity is now threatened. While some humans are at the origin of the crisis, others, more and more numerous, tackle it head-on and create solutions.


Angel's mouth

Drama directed by Vanessa Filho, starring Marion Cotillard, Ayline Aksoy-Etaix, Alban Lenoir, Amélie Daure, and Stéphane Rideau.

The film was presented in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

Synopsis: A young woman lives alone with her eight-year-old daughter. One night, after a meeting in a nightclub, the mother decides to leave, leaving her child to fend for herself.


Borders

Drama directed by Apolline Traoré, with Naky Sy Savane.

Adjara, Emma and Sali travel to Lagos. The three women meet on a bus on the Bamako – Cotonou route, via Ouagadougou. Travel is an obstacle course. They suffer car breakdowns, face roadblockers and witness theft between passengers. But their worst nightmare remains crossing borders where they are exposed to corruption, violence against women and trafficking. To cope, Adjara, Emma and Sali are forced to stick together and take care of each other.


Welcome to Sicily 

Dramatic comedy directedby PIF (Pierfrancesco Diliberto), with Andrea Di Stefano, Mario Pupella, Maurizio Marchetti, Orazio Stracuzzi, Aurora Quattrocchi, Vincent Riotta, and Robert Madison.

Synopsis: New York, 1943. Arturo dreams of marrying the beautiful Flora, already promised to a New York mafia boss. The only way to get his hand is to ask his father, who remained in Sicily, directly. Arturo then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He is far from imagining that the army sealed a pact with the mafia to ensure the landing in Italy…
