After 25 years, Terry Gilliam could finally see The Man Who Killed Don Quixote on the big screen. The release of the trailer in early April gives hope for a release of the film in 2018.
Terry Gilliam has experienced many obstacles preventing him from bringing to life his project to adapt Cervantes' Don Quixote. The British director himself describes his feature film as a "curse". However, after some abandonments and many years, the trailer for the film is finally unveiled.
The director of Monty Python keeps his grain of madness in this crazy trailer mixing knights, sumos and Men in Black. Shot between March and June 2017, the film tells the story of Toby, "a cynical and disillusioned young advertising director" who, according to the official synopsis, finds himself "trapped in the crazy illusions of an old Spanish shoemaker convinced of being Don Quixote". On the bill: British actor Jonathan Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean) plays opposite Adam Driver (Star Wars VII – The Force Awakens and Star Wars VIII – The Last Jedi).
Still several years before the release of the film?
However, some obstacles remain to be overcome. Terry Gilliam has been in conflict with his Portuguese producer Paulo Branco for months. The many disagreements between the two men led to the opening of legal proceedings that block the release of the film. According to the British director:
"Paulo Branco spends all his energy and time preventing this film from being seen."
The Paris Court of Appeal heard the case on Wednesday 4 April and will deliver its decision on 15 June.
The documentary Lost in la Mancha illustrates the curse around The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. However, after 25 long years, the film could finally appear on movie theater screens.
