A large part of the French think that today it is difficult to find a rapper who does anything other than be a "bandit". This is, of course, a misconception and filled with prejudice. Let's discover Thibal de Medici, a young 21-year-old Trojan rapper who tries to combine his training and his passion.
When did you start?
Thibal de Medici: I've always written, but not necessarily rap. Full of comics, free verses, stories etc… It was really at 13 years old in college with French classes that I began to shape my writings, especially with the writing of inventions. I am originally from Pont Sainte Marie, Debussy district, my older brother and friends listened to a lot of rap. I took the example of big neighborhoods like Bilnna, Hims, Neg2sek. It's okay to idolize them when you're a kid. They were ahead of what was being done at the time, that's when I thought I was capable of doing something good in this neighborhood. Then around 15 I became picky in rhymes, alliterations and I started to really take the form of rap lyrics.
Which artists have influenced you?
TM: Theartists I listened to the most are Booba, BustaFlex, Doc Généco, Arsenic, Salif without forgetting the Scred connexion! In the other artists who influenced me: Serge Gainsbourg for his music, the character who is deep and who assumes everything. He manages to transform the wounds of his life into a masterpiece. I also like its nonconformist side. Bob Marley is a person who believes in what he does and follows his instincts.
What do you like to talk about in your sounds?
TM: It depends, it's often about emotion. Usually I'm at a friend's house who composes and he throws me some instrumentals and depending on the sounds. I can write dark things, happy things, dirty things all depend on the mood that the rhythm brings me. I don't like to say to myself at all "hold I'm going to write about this and that", I prefer when it comes naturally.
Why continue classes?
TM: I have some facilities in class and then I am in a training that brings me a lot. In communication I learn tools for speech, design, social networks … I also continue because nothing is done today in rap, so I keep a cool head. One day these classes will surely serve me to fill the fridge. I also think that being me and my ambition would be sad, I would have nothing to say, today I rub shoulders with people I see stuff phew every day and all that inspires me.
Solo side of the planned stuff?
TM: I released a sound on soundcloud about 3 weeks ago. This sound is called Take My Phone produced by mowley. But for now I'm focusing on the new project with YaBon, I'm saving a lot of cartridges for that!
A wish for 2018?
TM: Wewish for 2018 is to release the project with YaBon and that it has a good impact! Big projects like that in Troyes there are few and we would really like to promote our city.
