The murder of American George Floyd is undoubtedly one of the most publicized cases of the moment. Police violence in the United States is once again demonstrated. The population can no longer bear to stand idly by in the face of these injustices. This is why many celebrities have raised their voices to take action against this violence.

The facts of the George Floyd case

On Monday, May 25, a 46-year-old African-American man died following an altercation with a police officer in the city of Minneapolis. The police officer pins George Floyd to the ground, puts his knee on his neck which prevents him from breathing, he dies. This is not the first illegitimate arrest to go off the rails in the United States. In 2014, Eric Garner suffered the same fate. The mayor of Minneapolis commented on this topic on Twitter:

"Being black in America should not be a death sentence. For five minutes, a white officer was seen pressing his knee on the neck of a black man. For five minutes. When you hear someone screaming for help, you're supposed to help them." […] To our black community, to the family: I'm sorry."

He later confirmed that four police officers were involved in the death of George Floyd and were fired.

The assassination is characterized here as a racist act. Celebrities express themselves on the subject especially through social networks.

Two speeches that will mark the spirits

Omar sy is a committed actor He writes a column in the columns of the Nouvel Obs called "Réveillons-Nous". A strong title just like its text which is hard-hitting. A few lines are particularly striking:

"On the ground, his neck crushed in the asphalt by the knee of a police officer, suffocated, asphyxiated, George Floyd died. No reason. A natural and obvious outpouring of indignation gripped crowds around the world. I walked for George Floyd in the United States. The name of George Floyd echoed many others in my head. That of Adama Traoré, in France. […] George Floyd and Adama Traoré had things in common: they were both black, of great build, their lives turned into horror in a few hours. No reason.

Already, in 2016, he had immediately supported the family of Adama Traoré who died in circumstances still unclear. In 2020, he walks in the United States for George Floyd. Following this text, a petition against police violence was created on Change.org led by Omar Sy. 7800566829 2 omar sy arrive en 2e position pour la deuxieme annee consecutive Artists take action against police violence

In London, British actor John Boyega, who plays Finn in Star Wars, spoke at a protest rally after the death of George Floyd.

He grabbed a megaphone and spoke on the subject, delivering an emotional anti-racist speech. He says:

"I speak to you from the bottom of my heart. I don't know if I'd have a career after that, but never mind. It's so essential. I need you to understand how painful it is to be reminded every day that your race has no value. We are the physical representation of George Floyd."
