Released in theaters this Wednesday, May 9 and opening the Cannes Film Festival, Everybody Knows marks the return of Asghar Farhadi to the cinema. Several times recognized for his films such as A Separation or The Client, the director is making more and more of a mark on spectators.
Everybody Knows, the last film of the Farhadi stable
The feature film put the director out of his "comfort zone". Because if all his films are rather "bitter" as he confided to the Parisian, it will turn outside his culture. Iranian, Asghar Farhadi deliberately chose Spanish culture. According to him, the Spanish would be very close to his culture. They would also have an ease in revealing feelings. Which, in the case of Everybody Knows, served the film a lot. The family atmosphere, the refuge as well as the danger, is placed at the heart of the plot. Led by the Cruz/Bardem duo (currently starring in Escobar), the film was rather well received at the festival.
Writer, director, multi-award winner
In the space of 8 films, more or less well received, Asghar Farhadi has made his place. The director has also won numerous international awards. The Golden Bear in Berlin, the César in France, the Oscar in Hollywood… His films become sensations. It is with A Separation in particular that the career of the filmmaker develops in 2012. This is felt even at the French box office: 80,358 admissions for Les Enfants de Belleville in 2004 against 976,191 for A Separation. In 2016, however, the director is talking about him. By strongly opposing the reform of visa controls in the US under the Trump administration, Asghar Farhadi does not appear at the Oscars, where his film The Client has just won the award for "Best Foreign Film". A committed director.
