Reboot much more "dark" and wanting to be more mature than its predecessors, the new Power Rangers was released this Wednesday in theaters. An entertaining origin story but without much flavor, despite visible efforts to satisfy the greatest number.
A blatant gain in maturity
The desire to make the subject more adult is felt during the vast majority of the film. Teenagers are shown full of dilemmas and complexes, struggling with their everyday problems and family setbacks. However, despite the palpable desire to make the film mature, the characters remain quite stereotyped, which is paradoxical since the first two-thirds of the film is devoted to their personal development. This is due to a certain difficulty of balance between the light tone of the film and the scenes intended to be more serious. However, we can only welcome the desire to make the Power Rangers so mature. This new band of Rangers is particularly endearing.Their very risky union is slightly forced but it has the merit of taking its time, thus avoiding the cliché of many superhero movies: haste. Special mention to RJ Cyler (blue ranger) who is both the most curious character but also the one for whom we have the most affection.
Power Rangers has the merit of being aestheticized and well realized. The one-upmanship is at the rendezvous, especially during the final battle which rewards us with a deluge of special effects. The situation comedy is omnipresent but the film still allows itself some more posed scenes to present the difficulties of our heroes. The dialogues offer a welcome dynamism to the story, allowing it not to stagnate too much.
A final part full of tributes
The reboot of such an iconic series can hardly be conceived without a farandole of tributes, more or less discernible depending on your knowledge of the universe. The final part of the film swaps the dark universe of the beginning for deliciously kitsch scenes paying tribute to all those who grew up with the Power Rangers. Between the cameos, the placement of the musical theme "Go go Power Rangers" and the announcement of the arrival of a new character, the entire last part of the film is made to brush the fans in the direction of the hair.
Power Rangers is a blockbuster without much flavor but full of good intentions. Although it is entertaining, neophytes may not find their account. However, fans of the first hour should be more than delighted to find the heroes of their childhood.
