Released in 2010, Letters to Juliet is the adaptation of the novel of the same name by Lise Friedman. The book wanted to tell the story around the "Casa Di Giuletta" of Verona, where the Capulets would have lived. In this light romantic comedy, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet have not finished talking about them.
Sophie, a young New Yorker, came to Verona with her fiancé for a honeymoon. He being absent, she discovers Juliette's house, where hundreds of lovers leave their love letters in search of an answer. She then joins Juliette's group of secretaries and discovers a forgotten letter more than 50 years ago. When she writes to Claire, the author of the letter, she has no idea that she will come with her grandson Charlie and that she will help them find her lost love. Throughout Italian Tuscany, Sophie will also have her answers to love.
Gary Winick directs here a nice romantic comedy. The story is touching and the viewer wants to go on an adventure with the characters across Italy. The decor chosen by the realization is quite judicious. Indeed, the ancient architecture of cities such as Verona or Siena aspires to romanticism. In addition, Verona is the city that serves as the setting for the plot of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The landscapes of Tuscany that are shown during the quest of the trio, give an impression of lightness, sunshine and love. One thing is certain, the spectator is dying to go for a ride in Italy after seeing Letters to Juliet.
The main role here is played by the sublime Amanda Seyfried. The choice of the actress is rather judicious. Indeed, the viewer can draw a parallel between Juliette and the character of Sophie who represents a little Juliet of modern times. The actress embodies Sophie to perfection, she manages to feel the doubts that the character encounters throughout the film.
Juliette put words on the evils of tormented lovers, and gave them new hope. This is the spirit that emerges from Letters to Juliet. Despite the lightness of the film and the classic romantic comedy scenario, the viewer feels good and hopeful after seeing it. Amanda Seyfried must have the gift of playing characters who take everyone with her in the story. You can also find it more recently on Netflix in Anon.
