Review "Bridget Jones Baby" by Sharon Maguire: The fabulous return of our favorite single!

Bridget is now in her forties. Separated from Mark Darcy with whom she lived a long history, the cursed cycle of celibacy seems to continue. Now focused on his professional career as well as his social life, men now seem to be left behind. This was without counting on his meeting with the very attractive Jack as well as his reunion with Mark. Her life then takes an unexpected turn: she discovers that she is pregnant but our Bridget does not know who the father of her child is!

In 2001, The Diary of Bridget Jones marked a whole generation of young women fed up with a society that imposed on them a pre-established standard path in which their lives were undoubtedly linked to their relationships with men. After a disappointing second opus, it is therefore without conviction that the public welcomes this third opus. And the least we can say is that against all odds, Bridget Jones Baby proves to be an incredible success that will delight both nostalgic and neophytes. Moreover, we are even tempted to say that it manages to equal, if not transcend, the first film.

We could have expected the usual laziness of studios that take pleasure in serving us warmed and tasteless comedies (even more so when it comes to a sequel). But here, what nenni. Back behind the camera, director Sharon Maguire succeeds in the tour de force of proposing a comedy in tune with the times and that has extricated itself from its past. The silly bias of refusing to follow the plot of the initial book is paying off. Exit so a scenario gnan gnan and outdated on paper and hello current references.

Of an undeniable freshness, the film offers us a succession of hilarious scenes and perfectly chiseled dialogues. From an exemplary narration where frenzied rhythm rubs shoulders with a clever succession of comical situations, the spectator never has time to roll his eyes, especially since he is held in suspense by an extremely well thought out guiding thread, that of the identity of the child's father. On the casting side, Renée Zellweger continues to touch us and seems to have easily found the inseparable naivety of her flagship character. In addition, his complicity with his two partners, the very British and irresistible Colin Firth and the no less exciting American Patrick Dempsey completes everything carefully.

Difficult to find faults in this comedy that makes you want to see it again as it offers a panel of enjoyable and memorable scenes. A true antidepressant on legs, it does not omit to remind all women who feel out of the standards (whether physical, moral or other) to love themselves as such (as Darcy will say in the first opus). A true apology for self-love, Bridget Jones Baby is this touch of hope for the spectator and the cinephile who, in recent years, see too few comedies of this caliber where British refinement rubs shoulders with perfection with the grotesque of situations in which finds herself (and will surely still find herself) our beloved heroine.

See you on October 20 to enjoy the reunion with Bridget!
