It's finally time to talk about Black Widow. This new opus of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has enough to disappoint fans enormously. Cate Shortland's film is indeed simply one of the worst proposals of the MCU… As a reminder, Black Widow takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. At that time, Natasha Romanoff, still played by Scarlett Johansson, is an outlaw wanted by General Ross (William Hurt). She then decides to return to her homeland in search of her former family.
Black Widow: Marvel Studios lazily applies its recipe
The idea of doing a solo adventure centered on The Black Widow is far from stupid. But Cate Shortland's film comes too late. And that's his first problem. In addition to being postponed by a year because of the health crisis, Black Widow is not the most relevant feature film in the MCU. While the series of the firm are a hit on Disney +, and bring fresh and new elements, Black Widow gives the impression of being a few years late. The work would have had much more impact if it had seen the light of day after Captain America: Civil War precisely, both scripted, but also on the substance of the subject. Because Black Widow acts as a forced passage. A mandatory film for the image of the woman and the Black Widow, it sometimes gives the impression of being gratuitous and vain. The feature film is sorely lacking in scale, and does not bring much additional to the mythology of the heroine. Other than adding interesting and endearing new characters, Black Widow is useless. No tension, no suspense, no stakes, everything is meaningless… It's a relatively empty proposition, which lazily applies the usual formula of the MCU.
A redundant film
And if it is not the formal usefulness of the work that is questionable, Black Widow is anyway a bad film. Cate Shortland uncreatively applies the usual clichés of the genre. Black Widow is clearly at the bottom of the MCU basket. The valves are low-end, the action is totally unreadable (too bad for a Marvel movie that advocates hand-to-hand confrontations and more down to earth than its peers) and the scenario is totally uninteresting. Cate Shortland offers a spy plot of unspeakable banality. Each story element is called, expected and without surprises. The film features a bland and caricatured Machiavellian villain, played by a Ray Winstone in total overplay. And the famous Master of Chore (at least for comic book readers) is also totally ransacked by the feature film. Marvel Studios still offers a not-so-bad villain, manipulated and biased in his purpose and actions, light years away from his representation in the comics. It's hard to destroy a supervillain so much… The feature film also features the worst introduction in the history of the MCU. In short, Black Widow is an endless work, barely entertaining, which accumulates the clichés of the MCU, and more broadly superhero movies. Apart from the prison sequence, the film offers no flight, no visual or scripted creativity. It's dull, long, and overall very boring. In the end, only Florence Pugh and David Harbour did well. Both actors seem to be thrilled to join the MCU, and it shows in their acting. The two actors give themselves to heart joy and bring a little vitality to this terribly formatted product. In short, you will understand, Black Widow is an inconsistent and impersonal film about an uninteresting story of The Black Widow . It is ugly, without rhythm, and especially without much interest. https://youtu.be/Fp9pNPdNwjI
