To embody a character, some actors are willing to lose (a lot!) of weight. This is particularly the case of Chris Hemsworth interpreting, the character of Owen Chase in The Heart of the Ocean by Ron Howard. Let's take a look back at this incredible physical transformation!

"I just tried a new diet called Heart of the Ocean. I don't recommend it to anyone… ".

Here is what the Australian actor wrote on his Instagram account. We could discover these words in the caption of a photo, showing the result of his weight loss cure. Chris Hemsworth is not the first to have played with his weight to best embody a character. However, his loss of about 10 kilos in 2014 for the film Au Coeur de l'Océan is particularly impressive! Before him, other actors have submitted to drastic regimes for the same purpose. Indeed, Jake Gyllenhaal had followed a dry diet allowing him to lose 16 kilos for the movie NightcallChristian Bale lost 28 for The Machinist while Irish actor Michael Fassbender lost 14 kilos for Hunger. We also do not forget Jared Leto and his 25 kilos lost for Dallas Buyers Club or the transformations of Adrien Brody in The Pianist and Tom Hanks in Alone in the World. The actor of Thor and Avengers has therefore traded his proud musculature for a marious body and a shaggy beard. All this for the needs of this feature film retracing the ordeal of the crew of a whaler who ran aground at sea in the nineteenth century. Sticking to a drastic diet, he allowed himself only 500 calories a day (when a man needs about 2,000 daily). In Ron Howard 's feature film (Apollo 13, Solo – A Star Wars Story), the actor plays Owen Chase, second captain of the Essex, a whaler whose misadventures with a sperm whale in the winter of 1820 inspired Nathaniel Philbrick with In the Heart of the Sea and especially Herman Melville with Moby Dick. Onthe set of Jimmy Kimmel, Chris Hemsworth had confided in particular this in particular:

"It's pretty funny to see that 15 guys who have to play bullies spend their days counting the calories they ingest. Whereas me, I only eat with small salads, small protein intake and I admit that I practically die of hunger when I go to bed. "
