In the world of cinema, it is true that we get a little lost with all the possibilities of films that we are given to see. What could be better than a map to better navigate? This is the project set up by David Honnorat, with The Great Map of Movieland.
David Honnorat is passionate about cinema and on top of that, he has a creative spirit. This Frenchman had the very good idea to create an inventory of all the films to see absolutely, according to him, in the form of a map of the world, with lakes, roads, forests, seas … In total, more than 1800 films, classified by genres and categories.
The cinematographic works selected by David Honnorat are geographically organized in the map of this imaginary world. You can indeed visit the Mountains of Science Fiction or the Lakes of Horror, passing through the Valley of Love for romantics. Walking further south, we will bathe in the Sea of Tears, ingeniously bordered by the Drama Region.
David Honnorat embarked on the project in 2016 and completed it a year later, after spending more than 300 hours on it. Co-founder of the cinema newsletter Calmos and Vodkaster, a social network for film lovers (now taken over by Télérama), hehad already started a similar project in 2009, but had limited himself to a metro map. A few years later, dissatisfied with the first project, he confides to Rockyrama that he decided to think bigger:
"At the time, I already had great feedback. However, I was left with frustration, on the one hand not having chosen the films and on the other hand not having put enough. So I've wanted for a long time to make a really detailed map with all the films that have marked me."
He explains that he started intuitively with the center, drawing the Plot Twist Lake and the Mindfuck Forest, which bring together films he particularly likes. Subsequently, he gathered all the films he wanted to see appear in a spreadsheet, and gradually extended the map.
An exercise that could be endless, given the countless number of films that exist and those that are released every week; This is why the creative imposed a limit: the card had to be legible on a large printed poster (91x61cm). Poster always available for sale on the website of the map The Great Map of Movieland, for the price of 40 euros.
