While the world is the victim of a pandemic, Capcom markets the third part of its cult license. With Resident Evil 3 Remake, it's time to say goodbye to Raccoon City and its virus turning inhabitants into flesh-thirsty zombies. But isn't that one episode too many? Does it honor the original of 1999? Focus! While the first rumors around the sequel to the very good Resident Evil VII: Biohazard are spreading, Capcom has not yet finished haunting our nights and bringing up to date its famous license. A year separates the release of the second part of this long-awaited third of the fans. Obviously, like the previous episode, Resident Evil 3 is not just a simple port to next-gen consoles. This is a true remake with a complete gameplay review… and history. Resident Evil 3 Remake is therefore modernized and in search of the sublime. But is it successful?
Raccoon City, a visual marvel!
Although this is the third part, the scenario begins before that of Resident Evil 2. We found Jill Valentine, determined to put an end to the actions of the Umbrella Corporation after the events of Spencer Manor. However, she is not at the end of her surprises when she realizes that the pharmaceutical company has sent a real nightmare to her hunt: the Nemesis. Jill then finds herself hunted between the biological weapon and the zombies of Raccoon City. We're not going to lie, Capcom does wonders in the staging of its saga. But at the expense of exploring his fascinating lore. Resident Evil 3 will not fail to this rule and will opt for a splendid staging. Even if he will focus more on non-stop action than on fear. This gives it its own identity in relation to the second part. However, it is very unfortunate that Umbrella is not more highlighted in the scenario. After all, all the revelations around the firm are made in Resident Evil 2. The first thing that jumps out when you discover this title is how much Raccoon City (just like Jill and the other protagonists) is magnified by the RE Engine, which continues to work miracles since 2017 (Devil May Cry 5 also used it and the result was breathtaking!). Technically, it's very pleasant. With beautiful lighting effects, characters more real than life and no framerate drop with 60 frames per second on pro consoles. But in its realism, Resident Evil 3 strangely ignores the gore side of its work. In order to be perfectly optimized and to see omnipotent threats appear, it was necessary to reduce the bloody effects of the second part. This may put off some, even if it is part of his very action-oriented approach!
Shoot everything that breathes!
As we mentioned, Resident Evil 3 Remake draws its identity from its non-stop action. While the first parts took place in very claustrophobic spaces, making you fear the slightest opening of doors, this third episode takes place in a city and pushes exploration. Raccoon City has become the perfect hunting ground in this hunt between Jill and the Nemesis. This makes it possible to face successive waves of enemies, much more numerous and tough than in the previous part. In terms of gameplay, it remains identical to the basics of Resident Evil 2 while offering its share of new features: a dodge system for example. The gameplay, however, is much more accessible since the terrain is larger, making Jill Valentine feel the danger at every moment. For lovers of the original game, you should remember that it was impossible to shoot while moving. The ability to do so makes everything much more dynamic (and accessible). Small flaw: who says action game says ammunition galore! Certainly, the survival side returns with inventory management, the systematic appearance of enemies and the fear of crossing Nemesis anytime as the latter is indestructible! However, it is not difficult to find a lot of ammunition. It's much less scary when you have a dozen rifle cartridges and you still find some on your way. Especially since you can make your own ammunition. It all depends on the difficulty in which you play, but we must recognize that the challenge suffers a little bit. Another flaw: the damage system seems to be the subject of chance. Killing a zombie could sometimes be more complicated than killing the most powerful monster in the game, while a grenade can do a lot more damage than a point-blank rifle!
what? Is it over yet?
Resident Evil 3 Remake transpires so much action that we get to see the end credits very quickly. This is where the real weak point of the game lies. Capcom has made a lot of sacrifices to modernize its eponymous game. They removed parts of the original game, added not really exciting new features and modified the bestiary to perfectly match what made the second part. Thus, we see the end of the game arrive after four short hours of play! Six for those who take the time to explore and find something to survive. All this is memorable but four hours is really too short! The second part is often alluded to in this test, but the game justifies it all the time. Resident Evil 3 was a unique episode at the time, while Resident Evil 3 Remake has only the action to stand out from the previous installment, as Capcom wanted to get too close to the success of Resident Evil 2 Remake. We have the strange impression of playing only DLC. Dynamic, strong, intense, sensational… but a DLC anyway. For the biggest fans of the saga, this could sound like a betrayal! This comparison is also justified by the fact that this game is the first remake of the saga to have only one playable arc while the first parts could increase the lifespan by the two campaigns (Jill and Chris, Claire and Leon). Carlos Oliveira is playable but only appears as a secondary character. However, we can count on obtaining the best score and difficulty levels to dive back in, but replayability still seems non-existent…
Resident Evil Resistance ?
At the time, Resident Evil 3 offered for the first time the famous "Mercenary" mode, which consists of eradicating as many enemies as possible in confined spaces to inflate its score. Capcom has seen fit not to reinvent it but to create a new online game mode: Resident Evil Resistance ! In this game mode, you play as a survivor or the Mastermind. Playing first will make you hate multiplayer as it is not a pleasure. We know that in a horror movie, many are not supposed to survive but was it really necessary that the gameplay completely unbalance everything? We are slow, weak, sometimes idiotic… And we have a lot of disadvantages unlike the Mastermind which can win more easily. Playing this role on the other hand is the great strength of this multiplayer because, as the name suggests, we have control of the game and we must make sure that the survivors do not win. It's all strangely reminiscent of Dead by Daylight, but Capcom doesn't seem to have completely finished its multiplayer. A taste of unfinished business and déjà vu is felt in each game… Resident Evil 3 was an innovative game with real risk-taking on Capcom's part. This is what disturbs the most in this Resident Evil 3 Remake : this too great desire to look like its predecessor. The game is a real pleasure, but the feeling of playing DLC is painful. Fans may scream or dive back into the original. Because the game seriously makes you want to rediscover the eponymous game. And you, are you able to plunge with Jill Valentine into the hell of Raccoon City?
