This is a first for Pearl Abyss, developer studio of Black Desert Online, since its staff will participate in the Game Developers Conference (GDC) to share their experience working on the game.

The Black Desert Online mmorpg, launched since 2015, has been talked about for its high-quality graphics, its huge open world and its combat system, close to a BTA.

Pearl Abyss will present internationally, for the first time in its history: its proprietary game engine used for the development of its games and the person behind the soundtrack.

Conference 1: on music with Hwiman Ryu

On March 23 , Pearl Abyss will hold two conferences in the 2009 room of West Hall during GDC. The first speaker is none other than Black Desert Online's audio director, Hwiman Ryu. He has been part of the team since the very beginning of the Black Desert project and takes care of the sounds as well as the music. He is currently considered one of the most popular audio directors in the Korean video game industry. Mr. Ryu is best known as "Croove", especially for his work on rhythm games like DJMax and EZ2DJ. He is currently working on the remaster of the Black Desert soundtrack in partnership with major European orchestras.

Hwiman Ryu will talk about his victories and failures on the Black Desert project, and highlight the compositions, arrangements and setting up of the soundtrack. It will be interesting to hear his explanation of the link between music and open-world play with a care on the different stages such as scores, planning, production and the finished product. He should also talk about his experience recording with an orchestra for the audio remaster and how to manage orchestral recordings without wasting valuable resources.
