After Uyuni in Bolivia, we are back for a Spanish discovery on the side of Andalusia. On the road to the white villages, there is a village that stands out among the others and that we visited this summer: Setenil de las Bodegas. The kind of village that is remembered by its atypical and surprising side. Travelers come from far and wide to see it. Clearly a special village. Well come on we stop the suspense and we tell you why it is so … curious.

Cave houses under gigantic rocks

The particularity of Setenil de las Bodegas is that it bends to the shapes of the surrounding rocks. The village is entirely built in the rock hence its name troglodyte. A whole village that lives in the shadow of a hill and around a stream. It dates from the Middle Ages so much older than us. Strolling through the cobbled streets, we imagine the work of architecture and urban planning that must have been very complicated to build all these houses in the middle of nature. But in reality we do not think about all this when we walk in the streets of Setenil. We find it especially funny to have stone walls when we have a beer in a bar. A wall that looks very natural, so true it seems. And that's normal, it's a real stone.

Setenil de las bodegas, perched in the hollow of the mountain

We continue to advance in the streets and we discover several houses and shops, with the back wall coming directly from the hill. The house was created according to the rock. Impressive! Above us is either the rock or the mountain. The inclination of the path begins to change and we arrive little by little on the heights. A staircase attracts us out of the corner of our eye and after taking it we arrive just in front of a pretty church at the top of the village. In the distance, you can see olive groves, vineyards and other villages. Just sublime! A beautiful region of Spain that is emerging around us.

On the dungeon of Setenil we see the bodegas

At the top of the path, the keep of the castle is very imposing. At the top of the stairs a nice view of the area and Ronda in the distance. The vines below clearly explain where the name Setenil comes from. Bodegas are the vineyards that can be visited. And even taste the wines in moderation. For an even more intense visit, come and read our article on this Spanish cave village. Another atypical place on the route of the white 😉 villages

The next episode will take place in South America near Rio. You will see that Brazil also hides beautiful nuggets. And do not hesitate to come to our blog to discover even more landscapes of the world;)
