1. A short anime, aiming at quality rather than quantity
Tabi Machi Late Show, you know, it's a set of 4 episodes. An anime that is not likely to drag and extend in endless lengths. But what you may not know is that the format of these episodes is just 7 minutes and 50 seconds. A relatively short format, which leaves time to discover and appreciate the characters and the atmosphere, without getting tired. We are almost sad to leave them so quickly… A perfectly chosen format, which multiplies the emotions conveyed by the characters of Tabi Machi Late Show.
2. An "animation" that we rarely see
The animation of Tabi Machi Late Show could appear simplistic and cheesy for some, rather natural for others because it sticks to the theme. Finally… If we can talk about animation. It will certainly require a little adaptation time during the first episode because the comparison of the animation with that of a slideshow is not very far from reality. Because it is rather a parade of images and texts, with some rare real mouth animations. But to stop at this would be a big mistake because this ballet of images leads emotion and beauty without all the overrated animation that we know now. Episode 3 "Summer Festival", is the most successful example of this postulate, both in the animation and in the richness of the emotions it delivers us. But you will still have to ignore "this defect" of animation (which is not one for me) that seems to put off so many people…
3. Characters with finesse
The main characters of Tabi Machi Late Show are always two per episode. And it is always easy to identify with it, whether they are children, adults or young high school students looking for themselves. Several ages of life pass there. The themes are similar, constantly around a trip and / or a farewell. The naturalness with which their emotions are portrayed reinforces this unique imprint that Tabi Machi Late Show leaves: a quiet strength, the story of a journey, but which will inevitably end with a farewell, a nagging sadness that will inevitably bring us back to a personal situation already lived. And in this area, it is still episode 3 that comes out the most striking. Especially since it is very easy to watch the reunion of these two children separated by life, but also to see two classmates tear each other apart or a teacher say goodbye. Characters of which we do not know much, but that we accompany at a moment T of their lives, for a small moment of sharing strong in emotions with a beautiful finale.
4. A poetic atmosphere on a daily basis
With the Comix Wave studio, it's hard to imagine an anime or a movie that doesn't transport us to a dreamlike country. Not to mention the themes, carried by the studio and it goes without saying that the farewell is not far from the distance that Makoto Shinkai continually and beautifully evokes in his films. But here, it is Yunumata who leads the dance. And his dance, slower and more banal than that of his companion, takes us on more or less sumptuous journeys, but more or less tragic too. No great idyllic landscapes, no starry sky shining with a thousand little lights under a beautiful moon. In Tabi Machi Late Show, everything is reality and daily. A small restaurant in town, a classroom or a school roof, a summer matsuri (festival), a park where you can admire the blossoming of cherry blossoms… But nevertheless, through these paintings of everyday life, Yunumata manages to affix a certain melody, a certain poetry that is difficult not to see. And perhaps the ballet of images delivered as animation is no stranger to it either…
5. A soundtrack that also makes you travel
Like its big brothers Byousuku go Senchimetoru or The Tower Beyond the Clouds, Tabi Machi Late Show has a beautiful musical soundtrack. Admittedly, it has nothing to do with the stature of those of its elders composed by Tenmon. But by listening, you will appreciate these notes sometimes trumpeting, sometimes soft and its enchanting piano. Short OST that I will like to listen to again in loop. A soundtrack composed by Nishimura Shingo, who participates in his first real project. An invitation to travel and successful reverie for this composer that I would enjoy following in his future projects!
In short, Tabi Machi Late Show is a short anime that will please you if you like travel and farewell, but if you also know how to open your eyes and your heart to the atypical animation offered by Comix Wave. An unknown anime and little expected this winter, which nevertheless transports beautiful emotions in a format that is both adapted and original. いってらっしゃい!Itterasshai ! (Have a good trip)
