In June 2022, SBS and Viki released their new drama "Why Her? ", directed by Park so Jin, to whom we owe among others "The Hymn of Death" or "While you were sleeping". We plunge into the judicial world but also and above all into corruption, power and all that this can lead to perversion. All around a woman lawyer who raises the question of the place of women in the world of work, especially when they are ambitious. When you love this universe, no doubt, "Why Her " (or "Why Oh so Jae?") is to be discovered.
Synopsis
Oh so Jae, a careerist lawyer who seems merciless and relentless, finds herself demoted and becomes a professor at a university, following a murder story related to a case she was handling. She soon found herself running the university's legal center with some of her students, and through one of them, Gong Chan, she rediscovered herself and regained the aspirations she had before becoming so ambitious. She then decides, with all her students at the legal center, to bring down the founder of the prestigious law firm for which she works. But we also and above all discover a lot of tangled stories, terrible revelations, twists throughout the episodes. And above all, we (re)discover how hard, dark, poignant human nature can be and what greed for power can lead us to do.
THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DRAMA
First of all, Seo Hyun Jin (Oh so Jae) has a different role here than those in which we are used to seeing her. Careerist and cold at first, she gradually manages to show us that she also has flaws, and especially that she remains human. In addition, we learn quite quickly his terrible past which will be revealed gradually and which makes the viewer understand why such a change. In the end we love this character who defends the place of women in the world of work but also this wounded woman who has decided not to suffer anymore. This character is beautiful and touching all along often leaving a doubt about who she really is. She carries her character wonderfully and it is to be tasted. Seo Hyun Jin was nominated for the 2022 APAN Star Awards, and she was well deserving of this nomination. Then, the stories, the investigations are very well intertwined in each other, everything is well tied and dynamic, we do not get bored. Some twists and turns will leave you stunned by so much darkness in this world. Others will touch you and you will find them terribly unfair. In short, twist after twist, it never stops: they shake you and keep you in suspense during the 16 episodes. The secondary characters are all really good, and complement all the stories perfectly. Everyone is in their place. Finally, corruption and the evil facet of power are highlighted through the character of Heo Joon Ho. His almost inhuman role is terribly mesmerizing. And even if it leaves a bitter taste, it is so well done, that we can only want to know the why of the how and the rest. The absolute horror of all that greed for power can bring, and all that can be done, without putting a single human emotion into it, is mind-blowing and at the same time so plausible that it is disturbing but excellently well done. Heo Joon Ho is magnificent realism to the end in this role, convinced to be untouchable throughout, so sure of himself and his choices. The relationship with his sons can only challenge, and touch. We hate it but how well it is worn. Bravo.
THE WEAK POINTS OF THE DRAMA
One of the first things we could pick up on might be Hwang In Yeob, who plays Gong Chan. Little known yet, because he started his career in 2018 and has less than 10 dramas to his credit, even if he is a good actor, he is very young here and remains a little bland compared to Seo Hyun Jin. We discovered him recently, among others, in " The sound of magic" alongside Ji Chang Wook. We will adhere or not but he is more or less well perceived in this role, which does not take away his natural game but too far back from his companion on the screen. It must be said that Seo Hyun Jin and Heo Joon Ho, carry this drama alone. Their characters, moreover, share a special relationship. These are finally the two most important performances to remember from this production, putting all the others rather in the background. Finally, can we talk about romance? This one is in red thread, not very marked, which could not be disturbing if it was not again experienced as a shift. Like any drama, we will adhere or not, because it remains pretty, but still seems a little out of reality, and this is reinforced by the few scenes and gestures between the two of them, which does not allow to believe this story. From the first episodes, the audience rate was at the rendezvous, even exceeding 10% on some episodes, including the last. It is rather well rated on the platforms and when you like the judicial universe and corruption, it is really to discover. But we must still not be afraid to know how perverse, emotionless and monstrous "human" can be when it comes to power. But if you like all this universe, then we advise you to go see it without waiting on Rakuten Viki. If you like legal dramas, " Lawless Lawyer" is also to be discovered.
