It is clear that one cannot talk about this drama without alluding to the controversy that has earned it a petition, calling for the closure of the South Korean television network JTBC, the broadcaster of the drama, signed by more than 30,000 people. The series, which stars Jung Hae-In and Jisoo from Blackpink, had been accused of twisting the story even before the long-awaited first two episodes aired. Two petitions were sent to the Blue House and several sponsors withdrew their support because of the negative comments it generated. In an official statement, JTBC asked the public to trust and wait for the series to unfold.

The story

The drama takes place between November and December 1987, a very conflictual time in South Korea's history. Lim so-ho is chased and wounded. He manages to hide in the dormitory of a women's university and Eun Yeong-ro, whom he had met before, heals his wound and hides it from those who pursue him. But a hostage-taking in the dormitory puts each of the characters in their place, making them pawns of an absolutely unmanageable situation. 5958754 scaled Snowdrop, a Korean drama of extreme quality and depth

Impressions

Although Snowdrop is set during the era of a "military regime", during the 1987 presidential elections, the story itself is fiction. It is also clear that it is very difficult to overcome this difficult time that pushed more than a million South Koreans to demonstrate for democracy. A time of manhunting, torture, where people disappeared as in Argentina or Chile. To wonder if in another context, the series would have had such relief, such importance, such impact. The Blue House issued an official response to the petition, rejecting calls to cancel the show. The response said the Blue House had no intention of interfering in Snowdrop's production, citing the protection of free speech in South Korea's broadcasting law, which guarantees the independence of broadcasters and prohibits any regulation or extrajudicial interference. (Source) 16 episodes of about 1h20 that only talk about a hostage taking and that manage to captivate our attention relentlessly, it must be done. But while the first episode shows us a whole amalgam of rather impersonal characters, these same characters assert themselves gradually and become the pillars of the plot. So much so, that the romantic relationship is decidedly relegated to the background, even third and that the role of Jisoo becomes almost incidental. His performance reminded us strongly of the role of Lee Yo-Won in Bad Love (2007). The actress drags her feet displaying an expression so distressed, that she ends up stuffing us. And that for 20 long episodes! The two actresses have enough to be desperate, distressed, miserable, dismayed and a whole host of adjectives that would mean the same thing, since the expression is always the same. In addition, as we see very clearly that the situation will not improve, we already know that this expression will not change a bit. Fortunately, there is Jung Hae-In, which deserves a point the line. jung hae in jisoo blackpink snowdrop jtbc 081221 696x442 1 Snowdrop, a Korean drama of extreme quality and depth Jung Hae-In. We've seen him in dramas like One Spring Night and Something in the Rain, and more recently in D.P. We loved his performance, we almost cherished him. He has this ability, really very particular in him, to transmit emotions just with a look or with this little movement of the eyebrows that characterizes him. This description could give a banal and overly calculated impression, but by his gestures, he manages to really put a direction to the emotion of the scene. As if he knew exactly which button to press. But it's mostly since D.P. Let it assert itself. He has matured and this maturity transpires in his last roles, harder, less light. The kid stayed behind, now we are dealing with the man. And he assures. This illusion of romance falls apart and almost becomes invisible. There is too much going on, not too much room to coo even if, obviously their romance is very cute. We have seen this weakness from the beginning. We know. We will face self-sacrifice, sacrifice, but too late to turn back. We are very quickly caught in the net of this series not at all trivial. A touching bromance, more than improbable, which takes all its time to confirm itself and show us that it can be very real. snowdrop 2 7 Snowdrop, a Korean drama of extreme quality and depth This isn't the first time screenwriter Yoo Hyun-Mi and director Jo Hyun-Tak have worked together (we'll avoid the word "collaborate"). Even though the two stories are completely different, the two dramas are surrounded by walls. They are wide open spaces but they collide against these big walls, huge and terribly solid. The characters sometimes become like those little children's cars that change direction as soon as they hit resistance. These walls are to be taken to the first and second degree. Physical walls really exist but the worst are walls in the form of ideals, convictions, manipulation. Without wanting to get too much into conspiracy, there is reason to ask questions about politics.

The camera

Twists and turns, stories that gravitate, a struggle for power… all filmed with grace, with firmness. No detail is forgotten and the camera always knows when is the right time for an overview, or to zoom in and show only the eyes of the characters. In the most critical moments, it trembles, as if to show us the instability of the situation. As if the sword of Damocles that has threatened them from the beginning, will eventually fall for good. Soundtrack

The soundtrack of Snowdrop is absolutely beautiful. It is clear – too – or that she is not ready to cheer us up and that she could be too tristounette and melancholic. This could be the case if we listened without having watched the drama. But it gives a dimension to the images. It fits perfectly with each scene and gives this last point of coordination. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-udcmz6jM_o Really, a drama of extreme quality and depth.
