After an endless wait, volume 13 of The Promised Neverland is finally out. It had stopped abruptly and we were all eager to know the rest of the adventures of the children of Grace Field House. WARNING: ARTICLE WITH SPOILERS. DO NOT READ IF WE DO NOT READ THE MANGA OR IF YOU HAVE NOT YET REACHED THIS VOLUME.
The Promised Neverland: Summary of the previous volume (T12)
In volume 12, we had nearly sixty escaped children, led by Ray, Emma, Yugo and Lucas. They always had the same goal: to save all humans and children from every farm. New objective in this volume: change the terms of the promise with the help of the clues left by William Minerva and set out to conquer the Seven Walls. We fully discover the world of "demons" where only the "elites" have the right to quality meat, while the rest of the average population ("demons") is content with products from intensive farming and therefore of lower quality. We realize that children are hunted by these creatures, but also by their fellows, the humans who have made a pact with this particular race. What will happen to Yugo, Lucas and the children?
Decisive choices for the future
As we saw at the end of volume 12, Yugo and Lucas decide to stay in the shelter to give the other children a head start. They sacrifice themselves in order to defeat Peter Ratri's men. This choice to sacrifice oneself to save Emma, Ray and the others is a great moment for the manga. There are a lot of emotions, they had become very important characters in the story and the adventure without them will necessarily be different. When Emma sees Yugo in a dream guiding her, it shows us how influential they were on the group, we will see it throughout the volume. It is a great tribute to the two endearing dead characters of Goldy pond that has been rendered. Emma still wants to complete her mission to save Phil and the others. She manages to keep her mind serene thanks to Yugo (who helps her spiritually). She will also make important choices in the book such as not shooting Andrew when she learns that he survived while Yugo and Lucas are indeed dead.
A hopeful positive ending
Despite a rather sad volume, the end gives us hope. See William Minerva appear to save the farms, and provide a meeting place for Emma and her protégés. It's a new arc that comes with this ending. It is not only the escapees but all farms that are at stake. They want a world where they don't have livestock. We had been waiting for this meeting for a long time and this hope disappeared when we thought he was dead. We can't wait to see his face. Shirai Kaiu's script is brilliantly crafted. With great sadness in this volume he knows how to place a good dose of hope at the right time. We are looking forward to volume 14 of The Promised Neverland. The new characters look interesting (Jin, Hayato, Minerva…). We will be able to see how the story will unfold for all the children, because it is no longer just the escapees, but the children of all the farms! See you on June 10. Season 1 of the anime is available on DNA. In the meantime, you can also read the review of Volume 30 of Attack on Titan.
