An exciting series published by Kana, Shy continues to improve volume after volume. Scripted, drawn by Miki Bukimi, it explores the world of superheroes through the journey of a heroine in permanent doubt suffering from impostor syndrome. This approach feeds an original saga with a rich and dense universe. After volumes that were divided between action and scenes of life, this 7th volume focuses solely on confrontation. For our greatest happiness again.
Beyond the dome
Shy Japanese superheroine learns step by step her craft. Because it is not enough to possess powers, you have to know how to use them wisely and take care of your public image. But this league of super villains has just launched a daring attack on Tokyo enclosing the capital under a black dome. The heroes must separate to conduct a rescue operation. This is the moment that Stigma, the leader of Amalrilk, chooses to reveal two new opponents. Hallelujah first able to corrupt you with the power of Love. And Abyss the sister of Ai the shinobi, ally of Shy. The time for difficult choices is approaching.
Shy Volume 7: Maximum Voltage
Miki Bukimi surprises us in this volume by focusing almost exclusively on action. This one serves three Dantesque duels revealing the powers of our protagonists. Indeed, if Shy has been put forward, it is around his teammates to show their talent. And they are not too much because adversity goes up a notch. In the purest tradition of shonen, the clashes are as much physical as spiritual. Stigma in pauses that would not deny by Shaka the knight of the Virgin of Saint Seiya, questions the minds of his opponents.Win but why? This volume reveals a little more about the motivations of the enemy. His plan, diabolical, puts the heroes in front of a contradiction. To defeat him is to allow his machination to be realized. Much like in the movie Seven, Shy and her friends must find another path to success. A tortuous path from which our heroes may not emerge unscathed. But this is the immense challenge imposed by Stigma.
Gettingto the heart and mind
This 7th volume insists a lot on the notion of love, separation. It is indeed much more mature and dark than were the previous volumes. This is first seen in the dive into the psyche of super villains. All have internal scars that feed a resentment. All like Alleluia embody fallen angels. Perverted by Stigma, they become fascinating antagonists because of their humanity. Which plunges heroes and readers into constant embarrassment. If they have an ounce of goodness left, should they be fought to the death? This constant heartbreak makes sense in the arc of Ai the young shinobi. Appearing as a comic element, his character carries a whole part of the drama. The two sisters are a family, broken both by the shinobi code and by their unfortunate choices. But can we blame such a young girl trained in war for having gone astray? The author brings here all her critical rereading of myths in the light of the fragility of childhood.
Always stripping style
Volume after volume Miki Bukimi confirms her immense talent as a draftswoman. At the crossroads of Anglo-Saxon, Franco-Belgian and Japanese styles, Shy borrows on the one hand from shonen for the dynamism of the action scenes, for the facial features. On the other hand, he draws inspiration from Sean Murphy and Hugo Pratt to create striking lighting effects enhanced by a judicious use of hatching. The ensemble perfectly supports a subject that fully assumes its multiple influences. What changes in this album is the importance of the fighting. The designer then reveals a new string to her bow by proposing dynamic, spectacular confrontations. His work has nothing to be ashamed of in comparison with other series of the same type. We admire the precision, of his line, the mastery of the frame and the rhythm. The designer thus delivers generous pages in action and always as readable. With its 7th volume, the editor's 2021 favorite confirms its evolution towards a more adult tone while maintaining its sensitivity. For now, the seduction is intact. And everything indicates that this series is set to sit for a long time at the top of our list.
