We follow the character Arte, from the small aristocracy, who must follow the path that has been traced to him by his sex. Only this woman is not like the others and does not want to bend to her destiny simply because she is a woman. Arte wants to follow his dreams. She wants to become an artist and not depend on anyone. Rather daring for the sixteenth century! So she will fight and shake up the codes in a world where gender equality does not yet exist. A world where a woman has only three choices: become a housewife, join a convent or, for the less well-off, become a courtesan. In Arte, we discover a strong young woman but always with will, joy, a little humor with her clumsiness…Obviously, it's not just our protagonist as a character. We have her master Leo, who takes her under his wing who is also very endearing. Even though he is a man, he had to fight to become an artist because of his social background. We attach ourselves directly to these two characters and we feel that they have a link. They are similar in character and art. 
This anime is particularly beautiful. The decorations and beautiful colors come to mingle with medieval and sometimes classical music. Which plunges us a little more into the atmosphere of the time. We have here an unusual scenario with an unusual story. The drawings are very beautiful, with bright colors that show a joyful and lively story. The only snag with the anime is that sometimes, the words used by the characters do not correspond to the century, like the word "laziness" that we hear in an episode… At that time, they had a little more sustained language and did not use our words.It's a shame, because we see the effort to immerse ourselves in this era which is the Renaissance with music, references, culture…
A strong message
Beyond this touching story, there is a very strong message that remains in this anime. This is not a message for current feminisms, because it was not the same time so it is not comparable. However, we understand how hard it was for a woman who had dreams, to try to achieve them.
Because she had to face everyone. Not just men, but other women who thought like their husbands. Arte has to face a whole current of thought which is: a woman does not work and lives on the hooks of her husband, the only work a woman can do is courtesan (prostitute of the time).
The morals were very strong, so we see the struggle of a woman and what she endures. This anime will inevitably touch all of us. Even if art does not excite everyone, because the story is not fantastic like many other animes, this one could very well have existed. She's going to remove that label she has stuck on her and women in general. She transmits her passion, her motivation and not only to us since she transmits it to everyone she meets.
The anime is worth watching and the manga is worth reading. You will become attached to Arte from the first episode.
