Summer is getting closer and closer, the opportunity to discover new series. This time, we invite you to dive into a romance set in a high school, We Never Learn. We Never Learn is a shojo by Taishi Tsutsui completed in 21 volumes in Japan. In France, 17 volumes are currently available from Kazé. Volume 18 will be available from July 7th.
"Nariyuki is a brilliant and poor high school student who dreams of getting a scholarship to continue his studies at the university of his choice. Luck smiled on him when the headmaster offered to grant it to him… But on two conditions! Become the tutor of the two geniuses of the high school, Rizu and Fumino. The task should have been very easy, but the beautiful ladies have a big surprise in store for her!"
A common shojo, but pleasant!
Although series about high school romances have become commonplace, We Never Learn approaches this theme in a different way. Indeed, this time, our main character will have to help the geniuses of the high school to integrate the college of their choice. Until then, nothing very complicated you will tell us. Only, nothing is ever simple in this kind of series. Indeed, our three high school girls are in fact, geniuses, but in well-defined subjects. And as you might have guessed, it is in the subjects where they are least gifted that they will have to do best for their entry into the CAF. This first volume takes us into the beginning of a great adventure for Nariyuki Yuiga, tutor of geniuses. Although the story is not very original, we must admit that we took great pleasure in discovering this first volume. Indeed, the story is light, without headache or difficulty in understanding. The characters are endearing and the situation comedy makes some scenes quite funny. Plus, knowing that our geniuses have two faces makes them much more approachable. Indeed, although they are officially recognized as the geniuses of their high school, they also have this "dunce" side. This allows everyone to be able to identify with one of the characters, whether by the favorite material, the character of each or conversely, through their difficulty in learning. As in any shojo, a romance points the tip of his nose. However, our main character seems to be interested in each of the three high school girls. We can therefore wonder how their relationships will evolve as the series progresses. Will tensions arise within the group? Will a couple form? Or on the contrary, dreams before love? In addition, the pencil stroke is fine and fits very well with the tone and rhythm of the series. The reactions of the characters are also well represented and allow the reader to adhere a little more to the work. It should also be noted that the cover of this first volume, although it is quite simple, is full of color and exudes joie de vivre. A cover that we found very attractive.
A beautiful life lesson
One of the strengths of this series is that the author seems to want to make the reader aware that certain values are important. Indeed, over the pages, we can realize that despite the difficulties that our characters may encounter, none gives up their dreams to choose the easy way. Indeed, isn't it easier to get into a section where we have talent? Through this first volume, Taishi Tsutsui shows us that the pleasure of studying comes before the facilities. And to achieve their dreams, our three high school girls will do everything possible. Nothing is impossible when work and perseverance are combined. In addition, although helping Rizu, Fumino and Takemoto is the condition for Nariyuki to achieve his dream, it is quickly discovered that he will do anything, even more, to help them. He will sacrifice some of his personal time so that she can reach the top. Very quickly, solidarity and mutual aid will be very important concepts. And this, through the members of the group themselves and not only with Nariyuki. As said before, the series is available in paper format, but not only. Indeed, if the story interests you, but you are rather the type to watch anime, do not panic, the series has been adapted on the small screen. Find the two seasons on the legal streaming platform Wakanim. This first volume, full of lightness, was very pleasant to discover. We invite you to discover this series too if you like romances. Otherwise, we invite you to discover a series taking place in a very different universe, that of the Japanese samurai of the sixteenth century through The Man Who Killed Nobunaga.
