After the dazzling success of One Punch Man, it is the turn of the new series of One (Mangaka) to appear to the public! We are obviously talking about Mob Psycho 100, which you may have already seen the anime adaptation. This time, we are interested in the paper form. Let's meet an extraordinary boy!
Mob Psycho 100
Original title: モブサイコ100 Alternative title: One Hundred Mob Psycho Author: ONE Type: Shonen Genres: Action – Comedy – Psychological – Romance – Supernatural VF Publisher: Kurokawa VO Publisher: Shogakukan Release date: 08/06/2017 Number of volumes published: 2 in France, 14 in Japan Status: In progress Public price: 7.65€ Synopsis:
Shigeo Kageyama is a 14-year-old schoolboy who is called "Mob" because of his lack of presence. Yet he is actually a powerful Esper. As he grows, Mob realizes that his psychic power is dangerous. To avoid losing control of his power, he withdraws into himself and isolates himself. However, because of these repressed emotions growing more and more in him, his power threatens to reach its limits. Accompanied by his Psychic Master, he decides to become friends with a girl in his class, Tsubome.
A completely offbeat universe!
This series takes us into the daily life of Shigeo Kageyama (nicknamed Mob), a schoolboy who has psychic powers. These powers allow him to twist spoons, lift dumbbells, or make evil spirits disappear. Finally, before the mob explosion passes to 100%, because there, it's a whole other matter!
In this first volume, we follow Mob in several short stories:
- Arataka Reigen, self-proclaimed medium
- Teen doubts
- Tomé Kurata from the Telepathy Club
- For oneself
- I just want to be popular
- The invitation
- Laugh out loud
- Explosion
- The spirit that wanted to become a god
- The worst ghost spot
Regarding the scenario, the story is offbeat, the main character is naïve, next to the plate, and that's what gives charm to this series. However, I find this first volume quite flat, without real action or twist. We quickly go around the main character and his master, which is damaging. The author could have dwelt a little more on Mob in the first pages to know a little more about him and his habits. The adventures that happen to him over the pages are not very catchy either. I usually finish the manga I read quickly enough to know the rest of the story, but this was not the case for this first volume of Mob Psycho 100.
In addition, I find One's pencil stroke quite basic for this first volume. Indeed, the characters are not very detailed and their faces are quite rude. The backgrounds are almost non-existent. For my part, the graphics play a very important role in the appreciation of a series and for Mob Psycho 100, it was a brake since the graphics are all just satisfactory. After that, it all depends on the way you look at the drawings. Some will surely find that this pencil stroke allows the story to be even deeper and more interesting, but unfortunately this was not my case.
Mob Psycho 100 was a series that I was looking forward to, but I must admit that this first volume is not as interesting as I had imagined. However, we can hope to dive deeper into the heart of the story with the second volume of the series which was released last July by Kurokawa!
And you, what did you think of this paper version of the famous series of One: Mob Psycho 100?
