Keiji's ninth volume does not mark a break in the series. There is a fight against a magician, against a woman and a massive landing during a feudal war. Discover in our column what can give such a rich summary. The fun of a duel Still published by Mangetsu, this volume opens with the conclusion of the duel keijineuf1 Keiji goes to war in Volume 9 between Keiji and Kotarō. With two grenades and a chain, he managed to block his opponent. The hero of the series competes with other kabuki-mono to be the strongest fighter but also to wear the most exuberant outfit. Being kabuki-mono is not just a military status but also a cultural choice. In the previous volume, Keiji covered himself with feathers and even had two wings during a dance competition. Keiji is still an honorable fighter. He has no grudges and does not kill for no reason. He lives by a code of honor in a world increasingly dominated by money. Screenwriters Mio Asō and Keiichirō Ryù criticized the regent. He does not rule by his moral or political qualities but he distributes money to his political clientele. A feminine kabuki-mono Screenwriter Keiichirô Riù comes out of an all-male series. With the arrival of an independent woman, the reader enters the milieu of the women of the nobility. Kana, the sister of a friend of Keiji's arrives in the capital. A tomboy, she is the subject of mockery in her village for her manly activities and celibacy at the age of 24. She conforms to the same moral code as men but, on the other hand, defends the reputation of the women of her clan. Marriages are arranged according to the interests of the clan. She is supposed to marry a nobleman but she refuses all proposals because she has been in love with Keiji since childhood. However, Keiji loves another. How will the samurai deal with this jealous woman? Some elements of the scenario do not go well in 2022. Keiji is an unbearable paternalistic macho. Hanna is just a pretty girl for him that he can caress without asking her permission. The idea of female homosexuality makes him laugh. Fortunately, this part is short. More subtly shown, a warrior cries in the last part. An island far from deserted keijineuf2 Keiji goes to war in Volume 9 In the third part of the volume, the action moves to the provinces. The island of Sado suffers a civil war that Lord Uesugi can not stop. This trip is an opportunity for the designer to highlight all his talent. Tetsuo Hara still impresses in the representation of fights. He demonstrated this in the duel of the first pages but the reader admires in the following pages the diversity of his talent. We see a massive landing and then totally crazy combat techniques. However, the sets and costumes are also very precise: Keiji's armor is full of detail. It faithfully reproduces a breastplate of the European Renaissance. The landscapes seen from the sky are magnificent. On the other hand, we can regret that the faces of the heroes are almost identical (a very pronounced square jaw). Only the haircut can distinguish them. Even if this ninth volume of Keiji integrates three different stories, we find all the fun of the series. We travel back in time through the magnificent drawings. Delirium on the body reaches a new stage. A soldier looks like a giant from a heroic fantasy novel. These three stories also prove the talent of the screenwriter to embark us in very different atmospheres.
