Since June 3, the Italian series Three meters above the sky has returned for a second summer on the Adriatic coast, in Cesenatico. This teen drama is inspired by the book series of the same name written by Federico Moccia. It's the return of Summer, her band of friends and their incessant love stories. Touching, light and poetic, the scenario is overall successful. It allows you to escape in summer time throughout the eight episodes. The main setting of this second season, reminiscent of that of "Who killed Sara? ", is the same as during the premiere. Still in Cesenatico, a seaside town where you get bored when you live there all year round but which is completely transformed during the summer period. The city then becomes festive with a strong influx of tourists. It gives the impression of being three meters above the sky! They all come to bask in the sun and enjoy the beach. However, some scenes also take place in Madrid. And even if the environment has not changed, the characters have experienced many evolutions in their respective lives.
Catch-up since last summer
(WARNING SEASON 1 SPOILERS) We thus resume the life of Summer (Coco Rebecca Edogamhe), a young teenager of 18 years, good student, from a modest background and who ironically, hates summer. Finally, this was the case at the beginning of last summer, which coincides with the beginning of season 1. Because it is during this period that she meets her daily life, where she oscillates so far between her little sister Blue, her mother Isabella and her two best friends, Sofia and Edo. Ale (Ludovico Tersigni) enters her life, a charismatic and privileged 20-year-old biker who does not leave her indifferent despite what she reveals and the not very ideal conditions in which they met. The latter has a conflictual relationship with his father, who is also the manager of his sports career. Captivated by the girl, Ale sets out to conquer her at all costs. The new summer job of Summer, a receptionist at a luxury hotel owned by Ale's mother, will help the biker get closer to the girl. Everything opposes them, but the alchemy is present and will allow their relationship to evolve throughout the summer. This budding love story is the main plot of the series, but there is also a focus on the lives of Edo, who meets a friendly vacationer at her father's campsite and Sofia, who meets Dario, Ale's best friend. The delicacy with which we see their relationship evolve, far from romantic comedies too honeyed and unrealistic, arouses our curiosity and our sympathy. The budding friendship between Sofia and Dario is developing well.
A simplistic story but one that works
Even if the plots of the series are not complex to guess, and it is easy to anticipate what will happen, we get attached to the characters of Three meters above the sky, who will all experience a form of love during the summer. Far from proposing a scenario disconnected from reality and utopian, the simplicity of the story does not make it any less interesting. The goal is not to make the viewer lose his mind with a convoluted narrative. As in season 1, we see the lives of the protagonists in turn evolve during the summer. New characters are also appearing, and will have a significant impact on those we have already seen last summer. Thus, Jonas (Giovanni Anzaldo), thirty-year-old adventurer will make a place in Summer's life. He will be her boss in the restaurant where she works during the summer. Lola, a young biker, is Ale's new girlfriend. They are part of the same team, train and live together in Madrid. Blue is about to experience his first summer romance. She meets Alfredo, a holidaymaker with a passion for the environment. Dario, meanwhile, falls in love with Rita (Lucrezia Guidone), a much older woman who has a little boy. Finally, Edo's father has found a bubbly and vibrant new campaign, Wanda (Marina Massironi). These new protagonists do not disturb the initial story. They all graft very well to the initial scheme, and bring freshness.
Some narrative fragilities
From the first episode, we immediately understand that the past year has made the characters evolve. Summer, Sofia and Edo have just finished their senior year, so they have to make choices for their futures. For his part, Ale has rediscovered his passion for motorcycling, and dedicates all his time to Madrid where he settled. Their relationship has also changed, as Summer and Edo are together, and Ale and Lola are romantically involved. But everything is called into question when their paths cross again. All the characters appear in turn tortured by the love they give and receive. This is surely the negative point of the series. The ambient fragility of all the characters, which sometimes serves the main plot. It's not hard to understand how they feel. But the strength of their emotions is not always conveyed through dialogue. The latter sometimes lack depth and consistency. The social class difference between Summer and Ale is not exploited in the dialogue. This is unfortunate, as it would have added an extra dimension to their story. Their various disputes present much less original reasons. However, leaving this parameter out of their relationship may be a choice of the writers. Perhaps the goal is to show that love erases any hierarchy or social position.
A mesmerizing summer setting accompanied by an interesting cast
The magic of the artistic direction operates on all the stages. The atmosphere creates throughout the episodes, with the constant presence of bright colors reinforces the personalization of summer. The colorimetry has been worked with precision. The actors' clothes are always in accordance with their location. Many festive scenes are honored. The stretches of beaches dotted with umbrellas and happy beachgoers act as a transition. This is really the strong point of the series: it transmits the desire to enjoy the beautiful days during the warm season. The choice of an Italian and African actress in the lead role is another plus of the series. Netflix makes it a point of honor to offer inclusive and diversified productions (seen recently in another Italian series Zero, or with the famous Lupin). Nevertheless, Coco Rebecca Edogamhe's interpretation is not the most convincing. Amanda Campana (Sofia) or Amparo Piñero Guirao (Lola) make much more effect in front of the camera. But the producers of the series wanted it to be the very first shoot for a large majority of actors. This may explain some of the pitfalls on the screen. Overall, performance remains strong. And that's not to mention the beauty of the actors. "Three Meters Above the Sky" explores the complexity of romantic feelings when you are young. The series delicately presents love with a capital A, and all the evils accompanying it. In view of the final episode of the season, a third season will probably see the light of day. The opportunity to find the different characters, and perhaps to propose a scenario a little more extravagant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-d7Xv6UaB8
