The Third Day is a 6-episode miniseries developed by Felix Barrett and Dennis Kelly that aired on HBO. It is available in France on the OCS channel since September 14, 2020.

A story against the backdrop of disappearance

The Third Day immerses us in the heart of a small British island (Osea) where mystery and strangeness reign. Sam (Jude Law) is a man marked by life. He returns to the scene of his son's disappearance to place a garment as a ritual so as not to forget him. Attracted by screams in the woods, he manages to save Epona (Jessie Ross). Deciding to take her home to the island. This is the beginning of the enigma around this particular place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU411XQbm1U&ab_channel=OCS2020

A dynamic staging that accentuates immersion.

The staging is in perfect harmony with the story. It oscillates between close-ups and distortions of the image to better mark the oddity that reigns on this island. It reaches its climax in episode 2 with the metaphysical acid trip scene, which is sometimes reminiscent of the jubilant scenes of Terry Gilliam's Las Vegas Parano. Here, it is Jude Law who lives this very particular visual experience where hallucinations and his sometimes painful experience are mixed. The close-ups on the actors contribute to the anxious and oppressive climate of the place that comes to magnify the photography. Some scenes seem to be works by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio that come to life before our eyes. We discover with this series all the subtlety and importance of staging in the immersion of a work whether for a series or a film. The Third Day 3 The Third Day and the enigma of the island of Osea.

A spiritual story full of belief.

The story is particularly complex to follow, which can sometimes be confusing since it happens that the viewer is like the character, totally lost. This effect is a choice of the authors that relies on a three-star cast that allows this feat. The headliners of cinema are turning more and more to the universe of series that previously served as a springboard to the big screen. The Third Day is starring actor Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes, Aviator), actresses Katherine Waterson (Fantastic Beasts, Inherent Vice) and Emily Watson (Chernobyl, Breaking the Waves) who bring colorful characters to life. The Third Day 2 The Third Day and the enigma of the island of Osea. The story takes place over six episodes that are divided into two parts. Three episodes for the summer and three for the winter with in the middle, the enigma of autumn. We move from an internal narrative (where the character knows more than the viewer) to a spectatorial narrative (where the viewer knows elements that the characters do not know). The series functions as a mirror of opposites (a man and a woman, summer and winter, salt and earth). The first part is approached from Sam's point of view in summer and the second part from Helen's point of view (Naomie Harris) in winter. The two sides soon come together to move towards an exhilarating finale. It is this strangeness that makes the series unique and highly addictive. The Third Day is reminiscent of the movie Mindsommar on certain points such as the coronation. (It's vague, but you don't have to reveal the story to keep the fun and surprise that the scenario has in store). The island of Osea still retains a great deal of mystery.
