A FAITHFUL TRANSCRIPTION OF THE TIME?
At the time of our parents, mixing by origin and gender was rather rare. This is what the directors of this series tried to transcribe. The series takes place in France, in 1963, it is the beginning of mixed schools. Indeed, it was in 1965 that coeducation at school became "normal" for the new structures. This standard was generalized for any establishment in 1975, by the Haby Act. In the Mixed series, the girls arrive in second grade in the Voltaire boys' high school for the first time, and they are in the minority. On the side of ethnic mix, there are very few people of color in the series but we can see a few. However, they are not among the main characters. The series respected the geopolitical situation of the time. For example, one of the characters in the series comes from a Blackfoot family, she came to France alone for her studies but the rest of her family stayed in Algeria. However, we are in 1963, the independence of Algeria is declared in 1962 and the exodus of the pieds-noirs began in 1962. Yet the character doesn't talk about it. Before 2002, that is to say before the profound change in the image of the France on tobacco, the French thought that tobacco was good for health. Doctors, athletes, pregnant women smoked. In Mixte, the cigarette is present in most scenes. In places that may seem unusual to us today, in a classroom, during a disciplinary council for example. The filmmakers have not forgotten this detail, so much so that sometimes we can be shocked by the amount of tobacco they inhale. The sets and outfits of the people are realistic and have been well chosen for the time. Furniture, props in décor and outfits have a vital role in reconstruction and understanding for viewers.
Is it a TOP or a FLOP for MIXED?
With only 4 episodes, the series makes us travel. There are several main characters, we enter the life of each of them in order to better understand them. The evolution of their characters is already felt after a few episodes, we want to discover more. The series is well thought out because it gives us only a few clues about the lives of the characters in order to leave a little mystery and arouse our curiosity. The quality of the acting is good, there is not this overplayed side, it's a good point for the series. We are waiting to see more. Meanwhile, you can watch the first four episodes of Mixed already available on Prime Video !
