HBO's hit series Euphoria is back with two bonus episodes (the first already available on OCS) to keep fans waiting until the cast and crew can resume filming the series.

In the first bonus episode "Trouble Don't Last Forever", we discover the dream life that Rue (Zendaya) seems to live with Jules (Hunter Schafer). But as soon as she leaves the apartment, Rue goes to the bathroom, crushes a pill and sniffs her. There is a transition through which the audience goes from fantasy to reality, namely that Rue is still in her hometown and that she is stoned on Christmas Eve.

Euphoria: A singular scene

What follows features Rue with his godfather, Ali (Domingo Colman), in a restaurant, who openly dialogue on important issues. They discuss addiction, life, hope, grief, forgiveness, family, death, religion, love.

Towards the middle of the episode, there is a brief change of pace where Ali makes a phone call to his children, which allows to create a kind of cut, change of shot but also to understand the damage caused by addiction and the sacrifices it involves.

At the same time, Rue listens to a song that Jules sent her by SMS, with the note "Miss you". The song in question "Me in 20 years" by Moses Sumney, is interesting in the context of this episode since it is a song in which we wonder if our destiny is to be alone forever, haunted by the impact of another person on our lives. Indeed, Ali makes it clear to Rue that for her own good, she will have to choose between her relationship with Jules and fighting against her addiction since it is, according to him, impossible for her to focus on both.

An intense rhythm

One thing is certain, despite the length of this conversation we do not get bored once so much the topics discussed are gripping and that the performance of the two actors is absolutely electric and convincing. Ali's emotions run through frustration, sadness, regret and relief, as he tries to help Rue see that she is not the "unforgivable" person she believes she is and guide her to realize the value of staying alive.

In short, this episode allows us to learn more and better understand the character of Ali and his background, as well as that of Rue who turns out to be simply a lost girl, alone and struggling to find a way out.

This rather heavy episode ends with Rue and Ali leaving the restaurant, the camera zooming in on Rue's face to the song "Ave Maria", in which it talks about salvation in the midst of despair.

Is this a prayer that will be answered positively in the second season ?
