The Ligue 1 championship has just ended after a season filled with twists and emotions. While some players have confirmed, others have revealed themselves. Nevertheless, some have not lived up to expectations and are somehow perceived as "flops" in their teams. The editorial staff of JustFocus offers you the eleven of the disappointments of the 2020-2021 season.
The goalkeeper: Reynet
Baptiste Reynet had committed during the last summer transfer window for two years with Nîmes. He had the difficult task of replacing Paul Bernardoni, who had left for Angers. After a difficult 2019/20 season with Toulouse FC, which ended with the club being relegated to Ligue 2, the French goalkeeper played all the matches in Ligue 1 with Les Crocos. Unfortunately, Reynet conceded too many goals (71), also due to a weak defense, and made only 8 clean sheets.
The full-backs: Florenzi / Sakai
Loaned by AS Roma to PSG this season, Alessandro Florenzi may not be kept by the leaders of PSG. The Italian international has clearly not convinced the side of the French capital. The one who occupied the position of right-back, alternated between the good, the very average, and the very complicated on some meetings. He has played only 21 games this season in Ligue 1 for only 1 assist. While a purchase option of around 8 million euros is present in his contract, the transalpine international will not be kept. Leonardo is already looking for his replacement. In difficulty since the ouster of André Villas-Boas, Hiroki Sakai would be on the start. Passed from indisputable starter to substitute, the Japanese seems to have trouble living the double change at the club with on the one hand, the arrival of Jorge Sampaoli at the head of OM and on the other hand, the competition of Pol Lirola in his corridor since the beginning of January. The 31-year-old full-back has lost his place, mainly due to injury and his poor offensive contribution in his lane. The Japanese is expected to join Urawa Red Diamonds, currently 6th in the J League standings.
The exchanges: Panzo / Kolodziejczak
Trained at Chelsea, Panzo left England in 2018 to join AS Monaco. He joined Dijon during the last summer transfer window for €3.40 million. He is considered one of English football's best prospects as a defender. Despite being tracked by several European clubs, he had a complicated season with Dijon. The player born in 2000 has played 22 games this season. He has failed to establish himself as an indisputable starter, in a club that will play in Ligue 2 next season. Note that Dijon is the worst defense in the championship with 73 goals conceded. To complete this defense, we decided to include Saint-Etienne defender Timothée Kolodziejczak. Like ASSE, he had a rather complicated season. The one who had become a manager of the club lost his place as a starter and this, despite the departure of Fofana to Leicester. The former player of the Tigres, no longer fit into the plans of Claude Puel, who has rarely been convinced of these performances. The 29-year-old defender has played 22 games out of a possible 38.
Midfielders: Schneiderlin / Camavinga / Cuisance
Twelve years after leaving Strasbourg for England, Morgan Schneiderlin returned to France last summer. The defensive midfielder had left Everton to sign with Nice. At 31, he had to bring all his experience to a Nice team filled with youth. Nevertheless, the one who has 15 selections in EDF, has not really met the expectations placed on him. His performances are too irregular. He still played 28 games in Ligue 1, despite his very complicated end of the season. It is probably the biggest disappointment of this season in Ligue 1. After an incredible season, in 2019-2020, Eduardo Camavinga has somewhat disappointed, given his performances that were not up to his talent. While there is only one year left on the contract of the young French international midfielder (18 years, 3 caps, 1 goal), not retained in the list of 26 Blues for Euro 2021, the Breton club would demand, 100 million euros to let him go. The hope of world football would like to continue his career at PSG.
Forwards: Lopes, Benedetto, Icardi
Currently loaned to OGC Nice by Sevilla FC, Rony Lopes will not finally be kept by the Nice Aiglons who did not wish to lift the purchase option set at €20M. The 25-year-old striker did not convince the leaders of Nice. As in La Liga, the Sevilla FC player has been struggling in Ligue 1 where he has played 28 games and has been a starter 23 times in 38 rounds. He scored 3 goals and provided an assist in the league. A very poor record compared to his performances with the club of the Rock, before his transfer to Spain.
Dario Benedetto is the third Marseille player in this eleven of Ligue 1 disappointments. Recruited for 14 million during the summer transfer window of 2019, the Argentine striker is struggling to impose himself in the attack of OM. In 32 league games, he scored only 5 goals. Really too weak for a number 9. Moreover, the arrival of Arkadiusz Milik this winter did not help things for him. His recruitment is therefore a flop for the Phocaean management, which wishes to part with it. PSG paid nearly 50 million to permanently secure his services last summer. We are certainly very disappointed with Mauro Icardi's performance on the Parisian side. Little spared by injuries, the Argentine striker has scored only 7 goals this season in Ligue 1. For such an expensive player, we expect much better from him! It is already announced on the departure of the tricolor capital. Keeping a good rating in Serie A, it is still hard to believe that PSG will recover the amount invested during the last summer transfer window.
