Knowing how to marry each DNA specific to each title, playing with transitions to create a musical atmosphere… an art that DJ OG nix fell in love with. He agreed to talk to Justfocus about his job:

What connection do you have with music?

My father was a music teacher and he also took care of a choir… So at home there was always music and all styles! Then one evening, my family organized a small party and I discovered for the first time the profession of DJ … I was only 11 years old but I immediately fell in love with turntables!

Why was it love at first sight?

What I like about music is sharing, and that's what I find in DJing! With each mix I try to convey an emotion. And the one that gives me the most is classical music: even without the lyrics we feel the emotion that the composer wanted to convey to us, it's universal!

Do you like a composer of classical music in particular?

I really like Schubert and the first piece of classical music I discovered was Ave Maria. I heard it in painful circumstances and it really took me to my heart! But it's not just classical music that I love. I also like soul with Otis, which I discovered thanks to my father again (laughs).

Since then, are your musical bases for each mix?

Yes! I put soul samples, touches of classical music, but also funk… It's the closest thing to hip-hop, which is a culture I've enjoyed since I was little.

And how do you make your transitions?

Either gently by putting RnB or house, or with a little nerve with scratch … I like to surprise people! I have a trademark: to put in intro excerpts from films like The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or The Hobbit for example. It allows you to dive even more into a musical atmosphere… In fact it's a bit like telling a story, we make cinema with music.

When you started, which DJs were inspirations for you?

DJ Jeff! In Martinique we listened to him mix every Friday on the radio and we recorded his passages on cassettes to listen to him all week. Kool Herc was also an inspiration because it is the essence of hip-hop! Listening to these DJs I told myself that I wanted to do like them and even today I listen to their sounds in my phone!

Where can we listen to you mix?

I do live performances in the show Trappist.mag. With friends we were doing live performances during the lockdowns and we decided to continue by launching this media! Besides that I mix every Tuesday on Fwi MooD Radio and I upload my productions on SoundCloud (https://soundcloud.com/t-rorist)
