Hello Max M, can you introduce yourself?
Hello! I am 44 years old, I am originally from the North of France and after a career in IT, I decided to become a pop/electronic music producer .
Between the States and France, what is your favorite playground?
Tricky question! Frankly, the situation is very complicated for independent artists in France and the big media are reluctant to help emerging projects to become known. The situation is different in the States, Latin America and the United Kingdom. Indeed, there if the sound pleases, you are given your chance, whether you are independent or signed. For the moment, it is the other countries, although I would obviously like to be more present in France.
You are a producer and a performer puts his voice on your titles, how do you choose your collaborations?
When my demo is mature enough, I have to find the right performer. The two most important points for me are the emotion that the interpreter will release as well as the fact of choosing the right timbre of voice, the one that will fit well with the idea I have of the title. It's not easy! So I'm looking for the right person for the moment either through my network or via platforms for connecting artists.
How is a Max M song built?
I always start with the harmonic part because it corresponds for me to the emotion I want to convey in the title. Then I do a bass line draft and then add a minimalist beat. Based on these ideas, I draw the chorus first, and then the rest of the structure. Once the instruction is done, I move on to the vocal part that I usually work directly with the interpreter. Once I like the vocal line, I refine the production and then do the mix and master of the title.
You are someone very picky in your arrangements, how would you define the little Max M touch in your prods?
My leitmotiv is that you should not be bored listening to the title, whether it is the instrument alone or with the voice. Beyond the emotion I want to share, there are therefore many elements in my productions aimed at maintaining attention and making you want to listen to it until the end.
More broadly, what are your inspirations and/or influences?
In terms of production influences, I really like the work of Swedish pop/electronic producers such as Max Martin (and not the choice of my name has nothing to do ☺ with it). As for inspirations, I'm very eclectic! It can be hip-hop, rock, metal… I have a particular affection for the Eurodance of the 90s and the 80s.
Some artists consider themselves as "live" artists, you, as a dj and producer you are rather in front or behind the stage?
For the moment rather behind, especially since I launched my project shortly before the first confinement, but I hope to be able to do live in the near future while finding the right balance between the stage and creating new titles.
Do you have any concerts planned?
Not at the moment.
