First look at the Pre-Alpha version of Battle Princess Madelyn

Battle Princess Madelyn is a deliciously retro action game that attempts to modernize the formula established by Capcom's illustrious Ghost n' Goblins. Here is our return!

We play a young princess in the making accompanied by the ghost of her pet, Fritzy. Together, they will embark on an adventure leading them straight into the depths of the kingdom to defeat an evil wizard to save their family and the inhabitants. Pack your weapons, polish your armor and prepare clean underwear in a game that will try to modernize a genre that has since fallen into disuse.

On the menu, cemeteries, swamps, castles, crypts, bosses, secrets, quests and old school gameplay but with a difficulty curve that adapts to modern players.

My opinion on the pre-alpha version of the game:

I was lucky enough to get a key to offer you a first look (First Look as the English say) on the pre-alpha demo version illustrating the kickstarter campaign. The least we can say is that the tribute is well done with a well-crafted gameplay and a very successful realization in this version far from being finalized. We start the adventure after a first speech by one of our family members to finally get to the heart of the matter in the cemetery, the first known level of Arthur's adventures in Ghost n' Goblins. The gameplay is identical with the management of jumps and attacks on 2 buttons of the controller. We can aim to the right, to the left but also to the top and bottom of our character, it also has a very practical double jump. We can throw a lot of spears in a short time which will help us not to lose too quickly given the very high number of enemies sometimes present on the screen.

The real difficulty will come mainly from the erratic appearance of monsters in the levels. Indeed, they have the good idea to appear right where our character is and it will always be necessary to have the eye to anticipate and avoid being touched. We have an armor that will disappear if we are hit by a monster or a projectile. If you get touched up another time, it's guaranteed death! Fortunately, Battle Princess Madelyn is nowhere near as hardcore as Ghost n' Goblins. After a shocking sentence from our late heroine, we will be reborn from our ashes in a flash of magic in the very place where we died, practical. Be aware that the game is entirely in English but there is a very good chance that it will be translated if it wants to be released on console.

Another major novelty is the presence of our late companion Fritzy who will help us fight in many different ways. It is possible to assign him a particular skill that will have to be managed as we progress in the game. Like any good game that respects itself in 2017, we will note the presence of quests, combos, secret passages, bosses, improvements and many other additions not yet well implemented in the game. Another thing that is striking is devilishly beautiful and rudely well animated for a pre-alpha version. Indeed, the Unity engine is particularly well used with lots of very beautiful effects quite flashy and a fluidity foolproof. The music is also very successful which promises great things once the game is released.

Being a very big fan of Ghost n' Goblins, I was very pleasantly surprised by this version and I intend to get the game on my brand new Nintendo Switch. The game will be released in February 2018 on PS4, XBox One, Steam, Wii U and on the Switch, whichever console you prefer, you should find your happiness!

Kickstarter Campaign:

Battle Princess Madelyn is available on the Kickstarter funding platform and a sum of CA$ 60,000 is requested. The campaign is already a success with more than CA$ 96,000 raised and it will be possible to get a Nintendo Switch version for € 25. For those who want the game on PC, it will cost about 14 € which is reasonable. There are still a good twenty days left for the campaign (as of 20/03/2017) and it is a safe bet that many additions will be made thanks to the additional funding to come.
