As season five of the Rick & Morty series approaches, Hi Comics editions make the fan wait for the tenth volume of their comic book adaptation.
Relieve yourself on a robot
Like the previous volumes, this comic book adaptation of Rick & Morty is composed of several independent stories that can be read without having followed anything from the previous volumes. The first episode begins in the vacuum of space. Rick is angry because his grandson almost had them killed again. Wanting to expel his anger, he lands in the Rickworld. In this hotel, robots are designed to satisfy only the impulses of Ricks of different dimensions. For example, a Jerry Smith robot is designed to have his stepfather kick him in the crotch.
Rick quickly gets rid of his grandson in the Mortys' daycare to run to his room. Like a Japanese love hotel, each has a theme but in a much more gory version like the destruction of the world or a Star Wars with real lightsabers. Always measured, Morty opts for a cocktail girl in bikinis, drugs and alcohol. We don't see anything but, of course, the reader has imagination…
The fan of the Rick & Morty series will understand that this amusement park for adults is an allusion to the Westworld series just as, behind a counter, the countdown of the hours since the last robot revolt. In order to vent his resentment, Rick will opt for the bloodiest scenario. The duo will then meet again for an endless crash, parody of the film A Day Without a Film where they are stuck in a time loop. Rick relives the same cosmic accident over and over again. Far from being depressed, he is delighted with all this free time… but does absolutely nothing useful with it.
A chain problem
Quite rare for Rick & Morty, the family watches TV in the second chapter. But, Summer is in pls because her series "teen and inclusive" is canceled. Rather than reassure her, her mother, tired of her teenage crises, will pour herself a (very large) glass of red wine. For once more understanding with his big sister, Morty is looking for a solution through their inter-dimensional cable TV. By zapping, he thinks he has found a replacement program: a boxing match between babies but it is so violent that the whole family is shocked… except Rick. It is actually a trap by monsters that takes advantage of it to invade our dimension. But are they the villains of their story? In any case, they threaten Rick to get one of his inventions. But, the patriarch doesn't care because he has foreseen all the situations of blackmail with clones and other dimensions. He hadn't planned for the bad guys to find the box on which everything is written, however.
A family much more complicated than the Skywalkers
In another chapter, Morty wakes up in a perfect family. His mother cooks turkey without drinking everything, his father has a job. The whole family smiles and talks politely. The reader of Rick & Morty, just like the young hero does not believe it and flowers the trap. Through a series of misunderstandings, Morty became a cosmic entity. Resembling Marvel's god Eternity, the comic book fan understands that this episode is an allusion to the Infinity Gauntlet. But, rather than snap his fingers like Thanos, Morty prefers to turn a ship into a shower of roast chickens. The resolution of the conflict also shows that this teenager remains tortured by his hormones…
All previous episodes are very close to the graphic style of the series but the latest episode offers a greater variety of shapes. In a secret room, Rick stored Morty's worst memories that he had previously taken from his brain at his grandson's request. Each bad memory is illustrated by a different draftsman by different style. It is a succession of moments that are both tragic and very funny. In one of the memories, Morty kills his sister's imaginary friend while he understands with horror elsewhere what the unicorns' horn is for.
As always, short stories are released as bonus stories at the end of each episode in the United States. They are grouped here at the end of the volume. Rick meets his buddy but is attacked by pink flying seals. In volume four, Morty had provoked a genocide of their population. They think they are taking revenge by turning his digestion gas into a drug… but not really.
This tenth volume of Rick & Morty is still a great laugh for the fan and a blow in the foundation of all conventions. Alas, we are getting closer to the end that is planned in volume twelve. Fans can rest assured, there are still several special editions including the very funny Dungeons and Dragons.
