Mixte is a French series released this year on Amazon Prime. It retraces the life of the Lycée Voltaire in 1963 becoming mixed: it is the beginning of a revolution! The girls arriving at this high school are 11. However, high school will be completely turned upside down. Mixte is located in a high school, and thanks to this, the topics covered are relevant, and current.
A French series between fiction and history
It's been a long time since such a good French series had seen the light of day on a platform like Amazon Prime. Good French series are often bought by the big channels, but this is not the case, to our delight! In addition to having a very good scenario, this one is played at a time still little discussed in fiction. Mixed almost touches on the historical series, with a lot of links with reality. Marie Roussin wanted to highlight an era never before highlighted in French series and films. The characters are all well highlighted and worked, even if some like Descamps, a character of whom we know little, deserves to be more exploited. Despite this, the characters and their stories are well explained as they go. Let's hope that a season 2 is born to see these young teenagers evolve.
A series from the 60s with today's issues
The series highlights many issues and questions, which are still relevant. The taboos of the time are not spared such as sexuality before marriage, homosexuality. Others, are just flown over like female masturbation. However, it gives a soul to the series, it is not only the story of young girls arriving in a boy's high school. It is the story of teenagers and adults living their lives with these problems and questions. Mixte puts into perspective the pre-war and post-war eras, as young people do not know the trauma of war and violence. A much more carefree youth with its rock, leather jackets, and first love. The traditional and the novelty blend perfectly. The two generations do not always understand each other. However, some try to cohabit as best they can, and to listen to each other.
A reality not always pretty
Behind the pretty colors and pretty dresses, the carefree teenagers, hides the reality of the 60s. Racism is present in this French society, the pieds noirs are not welcome, even less when they are interested in young people of the "good France". It should also be remembered that young women who have sex before marriage are frowned upon, and insulted, even traumatized. These same girls are not allowed to be in love and date a boy without their parents' consent. Finally, homosexuality is absolutely not tolerated, and violence against gays and lesbians is present in the series. Mixte shows the reality of the time, which is sometimes forgotten a little too much. There's been a lot of criticism about the actors not talking like they did in the '60s. However, if they had done it, many people would not have been able to hang on to this series. There have still been efforts on certain language words such as the term "indisposive" whereas now we generally use the term "rules". Mixed is a pleasant series to watch, with a good script and good actors. Even if some things need to be improved, this one is very promising, being able to address even broader themes such as the beginning of May 1968. At Just Focus, we can't wait for season 2 to be confirmed!
