Pretty Woman was rebroadcast this Monday, June 22 on M6. This great classic of the 1990s seems immutable, as it is cult. However, this film could have had a very different look.

From tragedy to comedy

Stéphane Bern tackled on RTL the case of Pretty Woman. An interesting anecdote emerges: the film was not originally a comedy. At the bottom of the hole, screenwriter J.F. Lawton had an idea for history. It told the story of the romance between a man and a woman from very different social backgrounds. Until then, we could recognize the basic idea of Pretty Woman. Except here's the thing: no Julia Roberts or Richard Gere. Instead, the production had thought of Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer for the lead roles. We should not expect a "Happy End" either. The scenario has indeed passed from hand to hand. One version even saw Vivian's character dying of an overdose. Another version saw the main characters confronted with the excesses of an ultra-capitalist America. Hello atmosphere… But while the production is well underway, Touchstone Pictures arrives and takes over the project. And who owns Touchstone Pictures ? Bingo! A la Walt Disney Company. The company hastened to put Garry Marshall at the head of the project. This one will be at the origin of the drastic change of tone of the film, although J.F. Lawton remained present to oversee the script. The film then becomes a modern fairy tale, which will mark several generations of viewers. The result is final. Pretty Woman is a monumental success and quickly becomes cult. This is obviously helped by the iconic song of the film. But also by Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, who formed an emblematic couple of cinema. So what about you? Did you know that about Pretty Woman ? If not, we leave you the song below. It's a gift;) Also read: 20 things you may not know about Pretty Woman.
