A cult work of japanimation, Saint Seiya renamed in France The Knights of the Zodiac rocked the youth of the years 1980-1988. Three story arcs, 114 episodes based in part on the original manga. Indeed the Asgard arc is not present in the original work and was created from scratch for television. The epic moments follow one another and despite rare less successful moments (the knights of steel) and a less inspired Poseidon arc, the series remains a monument still unmatched. To a high-quality animation that allows the series to still be watchable, is added the finesse of a story where mythologies of the world, cosmogony, astronomy and wars of the gods mix. All relying on heroes, charismatic adversaries, very human and whose feelings interfere with their mission. In order to remind us of those blessed afternoons punctuated by the quest for the7th sense, sacrifices and friendship, here is the first part of the top 10 most memorable sequences of the series.
10. The return of Ikki, knight of the Phoenix episodes 6 and 7
The family plays a large role in the Saint Seiya series as well as the hardships imposed on young boys. While she insisted a lot on the harshness of the training in order to make them warriors devoted to Athena, the tone becomes darker with the evocation of the Island of Death and the return of the Phoenix knight. His noble soul was corrupted to triumph over trials. Will his brother, Shun, be able to bring his brother back to the light? Magnificent episodes carried by the charisma of this anti-hero.
9. Seiya and Marine, episode 24
Between Marine and Seiya lies a great mystery. The one who trained the Pegasus knight has a strong attachment to her student. Could she be the sister Seiya searches for in vain? In this episode the revelations multiply and the cornelian choices push our heroes to the limit of their limits. A touching highlight that seems to offer us the long-awaited revelation. But nothing is ever assured in Saint Seiya and the secret remains.
8. Knights facing the Medusa: episodes 27 and 28
One of the great qualities of the series lies in its perfect mix between action and mythological references. When the Bronze Knights face the Silver Knight, Algol of Perseus, they relive Perseus' dilemma. Indeed their opponent has the shield of the Medusa that petrifies at the slightest glance. How to win without seeing? Shiryu, the dragon knight decides to sacrifice his eyes to defeat his opponent. A poignant sacrifice, one of the great trademarks of the series.
7. Knights with the Double Star: episodes 86, 93 and 94
The Saint Seiya series also shines with its astronomical references. In the Asgard arc, it is the double star Mizar-Alcor of the constellation Ursa Major that is used to justify knights Syd of Mizar and Bud of Alcor. One acts in the light, the other in the shadow. This cleverly maintained secret created one of the first shocks of the Asgard arc: the surprise defeat, at the beginning of the arc, of the Golden Knight of the Bull against Syd of Mizar.
6. Siegfried's Sacrifice: Episode 98
The redemption and sacrifice of the enemy is one of the springs of the Saint Seiya series. It is often at the moment of their death that adversaries find their way back to Justice. What is different in Siegfried's is that the holy knight is not dead when the truth is revealed to him and he decides to save Seiya by taking to heaven Sorrento, Marina General of the Mermaid in the service of Poseidon. An exciting episode that announces the coming of the following arc: Poseidon. And you, what are your favorite moments of the series?
