It was in 2016 on Netflix that we discovered Troll Hunters: Protectors of Arcadia. The Dreamworks series produced by Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro was very popular with young and old alike. The production was offered two series: "The Trio from elsewhere" in 2018 and "Mages and Sorcerers" on August 7. An animated film is even planned for 2021. In the meantime, the saga offers its own video game. Available since September 25 on PC and console, it is developed by WayForward and published by the duo Bandai Namco / Outright Games. Focus on the test of the video game and to the delight of fans of the saga.
A game made above all for fans of the series?
Troll Hunters: Protectors of Arcadia is an action/platform game that is particularly aimed at connoisseurs of the series and the universe. Indeed, it will be less easy for those who have not followed the adventures on Netflix to find their way around. For example, to know who is who or to spot the different winks. Despite this, Troll Hunters: Protectors of Arcadia remains accessible to everyone and it is not necessary to have seen the series to enjoy playing it. Note also that the characters are dubbed by the original voices of the series, the music and the original theme are also present. Enough to push even more the fidelity of the series, and give a feeling of immersion and a feeling of conquered land.
The story begins where it all ended.
Troll Hunters: Protectors of Arcadia puts us in the shoes of Jimmy Dulac. The latter, with the help of his friends, must travel back in time to catch the troll Porgon and try to put an end to the Tempocalypse. The adventure takes us through the different worlds of the game and to meet (or reunite) our dear comrades. Small detail well thought out and that will please the fans; the place where the game begins "Somewhere in Arcadia.. " is exactly where the heroes decide to go at the end of the last episode of the series. One of the first winks of the game by the way.
A nice achievement, with its good and bad points.
Language expressions to review.
If the title offers a faithful adaptation to the series, there are however some flaws. For example, when the characters speak, we do not perceive any emotion in their voices. The title offers a lot of dialogue and long sentences , it would have been nice to work on this point. For example, Claire is going to be excited so her voice should express joy, but it remains monotonous and flat.
Equipment improvement and mini games.
If we start the adventure with reduced abilities and obsolete armor, it will be possible (and quite quickly) to improve it and develop new abilities. For example, you can have extra hearts, increase your speed or damage. On the other hand, theseimprovements can only be made on the market and on the other hand, thanks to collected parts or socks recovered from the different levels. The market acting as a "hub" is the hub of the game where we find all the characters of the game. To this is added an inventory, also acting as a "dashboard". The title also offers us the possibility to make mini-games, for resources (recover garden gnomes and then throw them on a target or collect socks to exchange for powers). Note also the presence of mini-quests. Indeed, some characters will sometimes ask you for services (get an autograph, for example).
Charging time, lifespan and difficulty.
Like any game, there are loading times. If some titles will have a very short time, Troll Hunters: Protectors of Arcadia is quite the opposite. It takes between 10 and 20 seconds to display the rest. A very short time certainly, but which quickly becomes boring when it is displayed often. There is a loading time at the end and beginning of each level, but also when you enter and leave a place. An annoying point, especially when you note that the game has only 7 levels. Yes, it is very short. Namely that a level lasts on average five minutes if we take our time and we want to do it 100%. Making a level at 100%, is not at all difficult and the ease of the title does not require us to think. We let ourselves be carried away by the rhythm of the game. It will take between 5 hours and 6 hours to complete it completely. As the game is primarily intended for children, the menu also offers a normal or difficult mode.
Gameplay and level realization.
Troll Hunter: Protector of Arcadia is a slide scrolling game. You can only go left or right. The levels are linear, so we go from point A to point B. On the actions side of the character, the panel is quite limited. Jimmy can perform the basic moves and use one power at a time. During his adventure, Jimmy can be helped by allies. Each of them has its particular power, they are essential to complete the levels. As in every adventure, there are good guys and bad guys, and especially bosses. The bosses of the game are not difficult, they just require a tiny part of reflexes. Again, the game is easy for adults. Remember that the game is primarily for children. The bosses are not scary and the dialogues (numerous) are very simple to understand. If the story offers no surprises, the realization is rather pleasant. Each level provides an overview of the board and character. Some levels offer more depth and beautiful light. (change the image setting to take full advantage of it) and everything is pretty well done. The graphics do not have the "whaou" effect but remain overall very pleasant to browse with your eyes. Three images of the levels to give a glimpse of what awaits you. Troll Hunters: Protectors of Arcadia offers a beautiful release on PC and consoles. It will appeal on the one hand to fans of the series who will be able to relive the adventure of their hero, but also the possibility of making others want to discover the universe who knows. If the title is particularly aimed at young children and offers a very short lifespan, it is nevertheless very pleasant to play. Obviously, the title has its little share of flaws, but name us a game that does not have a single one?
