The Lazarus Project is the story of George, a man with a quiet little life who realizes after experiencing the end of the world and going back that he has the gift of feeling time travel ; he is therefore recruited as an agent of Project Lazarus, the ones responsible for these multiple flashbacks who do everything possible to save the world from its various ends. The day his wife dies in a stupid accident, everything changes and he is ready to do anything to save her, even if it means breaking the rules.
A surprising and exciting writing
While one might expect a classic science fiction story that uses time travel as a kind of background spring, this is not the case and it is quite the opposite. The Lazarus Project perfectly masters its subject and holds its viewer from start to finish by constantly surprising him without going beyond the rules defined by the series itself and therefore, always keeping its logic in a straight line. You never know what to expect and she can take us anywhere, leaving us with a smile on our faces and a feeling that everything is both unpredictable and yet written in advance. When we think that it is heading in one direction the story makes us lie and the subgenres are numerous : thriller, action, comedy and even romantic comedy. All this perfectly mixed in a world that is gradually taking shape before our eyes and forging a strong personality without any difficulty. A gripping adventure, as much from an emotional point of view as in pure entertainment.
Strong character development
The characters of The Lazarus Project are very striking, especially thanks to their development that perfectly exploits the serial format and lets its viewer approach them and their increasingly personal stories little by little. We take the time to get to know them and we end up understanding why and how they face the very tough moral dilemmas that the story puts in place. Most of them make really questionable choices from a moral point of view always, but in no case do we manage to place ourselves as the judge of their actions, at least not before a long time during the viewing, because we have created a closeness with these characters and we are confronted with all the complexity of the various weights they carry on the shoulders ; And the greatest weight of all: the balance between the good of the whole world and those they love, individually. Each of them is presented as an archetype of police series or action team and is refined as the episodes progress. All these characters are also carried by an effective cast, among which we find Paapa Essiedu, Anjili Mohindra or Tom Burke among the most striking, but each of the actors plays his role brilliantly.
Plural thinking
Moral dilemmas, repeated time travel, love stories… The Lazarus Project has its share of subjects that could be described as existentialistic. Between what is affirmed and what is left unresolved, the reflections are numerous and this is one of the great qualities of the series. The characters give their heart and soul to their mission and are determined to save the world by any means, and for this they often have to put their personal interests aside. The Lazarus Project has strict rules, but they are only human beings after all. If the main dilemma is that of George who wants to save his wife at all costs, each character has its share of complications or even tragic stories. Many questions arise from the organization's operating techniques and the consequences they have on its employees and their loved ones. Does destiny exist, despite all the backsliding some people are made to know each other and live something together? Is the world doomed and is their fight really useful? Despite the surprises, is everything already written somewhere? The many moral questions, even going beyond the universe of the series, can also titillate the viewer. This is what makes The Lazarus Project so memorable. A fascinating story of time travel that takes us into every possible narrative nook and cranny by never losing course and putting us in front of strong moral questions, all this in a universe well managed from a technical point of view and carried by a talented cast: The Lazarus Project season 1, available in full on OCS on February 5.
