If you want to go on a trip to South America, how to miss Brazil, the largest country on the continent that shines thanks to its unique culture and history. Whether you want to travel to Brazil for its beaches, festive culture or to feast on Brazilian cuisine, the complicated part is taking care of the logistics of the trip. In this article, you will find all the information to organize your transatlantic journey, whether for the choice of the destination airport in Brazil, flights from the France or the best times to leave.
The main Brazilian airports
To get to Brazil by plane, you will have two main possibilities, reach Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo, the two main cities of the country. Both are in the same region of Brazil, which is the most populated and touristic part. Plus, you'll be able to travel anywhere in Brazil from either of these two cities. These are therefore two options to consider for your arrival in Brazil.
Sao Paulo Guarulhos International Airport
Sao Paulo International Airport is Brazil's main point of entry from abroad. Indeed, it is the busiest Brazilian airport with nearly 43 million passengers per year, or more than 30% of national air traffic. It is even the largest airport in South America, which seems normal given that Sao Paulo is the largest megalopolis on the continent with 12 million inhabitants.
Guarulhos Airport is located about 25 km from Sao Paulo and you can easily reach the city center thanks to the various means of transport available.
Rio de Janeiro Galeao International Airport
Rio de Janeiro International Airport is the4th in the country in terms of attendance, behind the two airports of Sao Paulo and Brasilia, the capital of Brazil.
Galeao Airport is located 20 km north of downtown Rio. On site, you can make your transfer, either by using a taxi or with the Transcarioca bus line that connects the airport to the Barra de Tijica district in the western part of the city.
Flights to Sao Paulo
As expected, the only French airport to offer a direct connection to Sao Paulo is Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport. With a direct flight from this Paris airport, it takes just under 12 hours of flight on average.
If you do not want to travel to Paris to catch your flight, note that some airports will offer flights that remain interesting despite a stopover. Indeed, it is for example possible to reach Sao Paulo in about 13 hours from Bordeaux or Toulouse, which does not represent a huge waste of time. On the contrary, it can be faster than going to Paris to catch a direct flight.
That being said, you will have to do it well in advance to take advantage of these flights with fast stopovers. Indeed, the flights indicated in the table above are the fastest offered by each of the airports. But as you can imagine, most flights to Brazil have much longer stopovers (sometimes more than 10 hours). In the majority of cases, stopovers are either in Lisbon or Madrid.
Flights to Rio de Janeiro
To get to Rio de Janeiro, you will also have to go through Roissy CDG airport to enjoy the comfort of a direct flight of about 11h30.
Again, it can be interesting to take a flight with a stopover from a provincial airport, but be sure to anticipate the reservation of your ticket so as not to find yourself making an endless stopover of several hours. Note that some flights from provincial airports will make the stopover at CDG. This is particularly the case for Nantes airport. In this situation, it will be more interesting to reach Roissy CDG airport by your own means in terms of time and money.
If you want to get to the airport by car, remember to book your parking space in advance. The best practice is to book parking at the airport as soon as you have the days and times of your flights. If you decide to go to Paris to fly, it will be all the more important to book your parking at Roissy CDG airport, so that you can benefit from the best offers. Indeed, it is not uncommon for airport car parks to be full during the summer period, especially at Roissy.
When to go to Brazil
Brazil is a juggernaut in terms of surface area and therefore there are very varied climates. Thus, it is difficult to decide on the best times to leave. This will mainly depend on the region you want to visit.
For this guide, we will continue to focus on the Southeast region. Since we are in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed. Thus, winter takes place from June to August. In Brazil, this is the dry season, during which rainfall is low and temperatures are around 25°C. This will be the best time to visit Rio and its region.
Conversely, summer occurs from December to March and it is the rainy season. During this season, temperatures are higher, with more than 30°C on average. It remains interesting to go to Brazil at this time of year, since it is the period of the famous carnival of Rio, an attraction not to be missed. In addition, during the summer in Brazil, the sea water is ideal for swimming and rainfall occurs mainly at the end of the day. These are short and intense rains, so it is quite possible to do outdoor activities.
