Zack de la Rocha: a return that does not convince

Rage Against the Machine is back lately. Or rather its different members have reinvested separately in projects of various creations. A few months ago, it was the 3 musicians of the group who joined forces with Chuck D of Public Enemy and B-Real of Cypress Hill to found Prophets of Rage. This Thursday, September 8, it is the mythical singer of the group, Zack de la Rocha, who announced a first solo album for early 2017. This announcement is accompanied by a first title: "Digging for windows". What to think of this first excerpt?

Of course, we are happy to hear Zack de la Rocha's voice again, but is this title up to what he was able to achieve with Rage Against the Machine? Unfortunately, the answer must be no. Zack de la Rocha's catchy phrasing is impeccable once again but the electronic instrumental that accompanies it is soaked in basic sounds, used wrongly and indiscriminately for a few years. Worse, the instrumental seems disconnected from the singer's voice. It almost feels like an electronic remix of a Rage Against the Machine song.

Should we condemn in advance any attempt by the singer to renew himself? Certainly not. Without falling into a toxic nostalgia, we must still expect the singer to continue to stand out as he has done in the past. After several listens to the song, we feel a certain desire to innovate, the problem being that it does not allow him to give birth to a striking title. However, creative renewal is often a good fuel in music, and we can hope that " Digging for windows" will be the only weakness of the future album.
