Adam Driver compares Star Wars VIII to Empire Strikes Back

If the wait for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is coming to an end, information for Star Wars VIII remains a rare commodity. No trailer, no summary, not even a title. The only thing we have to put in our teeth is the presence of Rian Johnson (Looper) behind the camera and the fact that this opus will be (unsurprisingly) in the continuity of episode VII. However, the dark Adam Driver, recently gave an interview to Collider, in which he is full of praise for this episode VIII or its director.

A sequel with a more "Dark" look!

This actually seemed logical in view of the departure taken by this trilogy. With an episode VII echoing episode IV, it seemed obvious with this future opus to enter a darker era, like the Empire strikes back. This is in any case what suggested the interpreter of Kylo Ren, Adam Driver, speaking of a "similar change of tone that there was between the first Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back". The latter considers this "brilliant and necessary", also speaking of the confidence that Johnson has in the spectators, whom he hopes ready for "Nuance and ambiguity".

But given the reception given to the character of Kylo Ren, we can legitimately fear that the spectators are not yet ready for ambiguity. Yet it was fashionable, in a saga as Manichean as Star Wars, to introduce a villain as unhealthy and torn by both sides of the Force. So let's hope that the audience will have matured and will be really ready to welcome these nuances of the character. After all, it's a shame to castigate a complex villain with high evolutionary potential. Especially when villains as one-dimensional as sheets of paper are not (unfortunately) lacking on the big screen.

In the end, Adam Driver's words only confirm what we already imagined, namely a continuity still echoing the cult original trilogy. So we should get to a dark phase with this episode VIII. And with Ryan Johnson at the helm, we can only be completely confident of the result. Information for this upcoming Star Wars will likely come to us more after the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In the meantime, let's enjoy without moderation the latest trailer of this first spin-off.
