NBC has just aired the first episode of its new comedy, Powerless. Inspired by the DC Comics universe, what is this new series worth? Our verdict.
In a world where humanity must deal with the collateral damage of superheroes and supervillains, Emily Locke begins her first day as Director of Research & Development for Wayne Security, a Wayne Enterprises subsidiary specializing in products that make defenseless viewers a little safer. Full of confidence and big ideas, Emily soon learns that her expectations far exceed those of her new boss Van Wayne and his colleagues. It will be up to her to lead the team to its full potential and to this realization: there is no need for superpowers to be a hero.
When the American network NBC announced the production of Powerless, some could not help but say "another superhero series". It is true that currently, American television is drowning in superheroes, whether they are from the Marvel stable like Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil or the DC Comics stable with the Arrow-Verse. But where the project caught our attention was through its treatment. Indeed, the series does not revolve around superheroes but the consequences of their actions.
We can follow the story of Emily Locke, an idealistic young woman who arrives in Charm City to work as a department manager at Wayne Security, a subsidiary of the Wayne Enterprise group (yes, yes!). His goal? Design objects capable of protecting the population in a world where clashes between superheroes and villains are commonplace. For this, she is surrounded by a bunch of totally crazy geeks! A rather attractive and innovative starting pitch that allows us to approach from another angle the eternal stories of super powers!
If you are a fan of series like The Flash or Supergirl, Powerless is for you! Between a beautiful animated credits (finally the return of a real credits!) And many winks, you can only be delighted! We find ourselves immersed in a world where Batman, Jack O'Lantern or even Wonder Woman exist, therefore, the story takes on a real meaning. DC Comics fans will not be able to help but notice the multiple references to the universe, and this is a very good point for the series.
Basically, we find ourselves in front of an office comedy, and you should know that with series like The Office for example, the bar is high. Nevertheless, even if Powerless suffers from the symptom of the first episode, with a phase of presentation and discovery, we feel that everything is present for it to take off! And the end of the episode does not make us lie on the contrary!
On the casting side, we find the beautiful Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), who carries the episode. Surrounded by Danny Pudi (Community) and Alan Tudyk (Firefly) as Bruce Wayne's crazy cousin, the young woman reveals a new facet of her talent and proves that she has lost none of her talent.
In conclusion, we hope that the level of the series will go crescendo throughout the 13 episodes that will make up the first season of Powerless. All the ingredients are there for us to have a great time, even if it is true that the series will necessarily speak more to DC Comics fans than to neophytes. Nevertheless, the whole is of good quality! And we must admit that a comedy on this subject is rather innovative!
