Director Agnès Varda and photographer JR worked together on the film Faces, Villages, which was presented in the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival and was awarded the Golden Eye, i.e. the prize for the best documentary film!
Agnès Varda and JR found several points in common when they met in 2015, such as their passion and their questions about images and possible devices to share and exhibit them. They then decided to combine their passions, cinema and outdoor photography, by shooting a film. So they went to the French countryside in JR's photographic truck. Between risky encounters and prepared projects, they went to meet people, listened to them, photographed them and sometimes even exposed. By laughing at their differences, the two artists also show in Visages, Villages their growing friendship through an extremely beautiful and human project.
This Saturday, May 27, the film was awarded as the best documentary film in the selection of the Cannes Film Festival ! Sandrine Bonnaire, president of the jury of L'œil d'or, explained in a few words the choice of the jurors for Faces, Villages : "The jury was deeply moved by the choice of Agnès and JR to meet the so-called little people, touched to the heart by this film that tells the consideration of the Other through art. Two combined looks, tender and generous... " Critics also seem unanimous on the quality of this documentary, calling it sometimes "a pure wonder of fantasy, grace, happiness" (La Croix), sometimes as a "breath of fresh air salutary at the Cannes Film Festival" (Les Échos).
Visages, Villages will be available in French cinemas from June 28th! Find below the trailer of the film.
