The film will follow the adventures of a young mute woman, Elisa (played by British actress Sally Hawkins), as she meets this mysterious creature in the laboratory where she works. Little by little, a relationship is created between the two individuals. To play the aquatic being, the director called on his favorite actor, Doug Jones (previously already alien in Men in Black or Abe Sapiens in Hellboy). Added to the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, and Michael Stuhlbarg. The icing on the cake: the soundtrack of the film is signed by the French composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King's Speech, Godzilla …)
