Star Wars VIII – The Last Jedi: Rey's Kinship to Be Revealed

Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens may have broken all records at the global box office, but it did not fail to leave viewers hungry. And a big question has been nagging all fans of the saga for almost two years now: who is Rey? 

The relationship of the new Star Wars heroine has probably been the subject of every theory imaginable. Daughter of Luke Skywalker, daughter of Han Solo and Leia Organa, daughter of Emperor Palpatine, granddaughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi, reincarnation of Anakin Skywalker… There is no shortage of possibilities and it is clear that some of these theories are particularly convincing (even if others are quite far-fetched). 

If we were worried about not having an answer to this question in the next installment (and having all the revelations in episode IX), Rian Johnson has recently provided some clarification on this subject. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jonhson said of the discovery of Rey's origins:

I think it's important to her in terms of her place in all of this. What will define her in this story? He was told in the last film that the answer was not in the past. But she shows up on this island to talk to this hero of the past…

But beware! Even if Rey's ancestors will be revealed in this next installment, several mysteries will remain around this character. Indeed, Daisy Ridley herself said:

It won't be a revelation like, "Oh, I know who my parents are now, so everything is taking shape." 

The actress also downplayed the importance of the discovery, adding:

Yes, it could change his mind and bring him a semblance of peace to move forward. But in the end, what has to happen will happen and her abilities are already part of her. So personally, I think it's less important than she might think. 

Along with these discoveries, we should know a little more about Finn's past and his origins. In particular, we should learn how he became a Stormtrooper. A more increased light should also be shed on Supreme Leader Snoke, who is also the subject of the craziest theories (Darth Plagueis for some, Mace Windu for others, Palpatine returned from the dead, etc, etc.)

Many answers should be given to us in The Last Jedi concerning this line-up of new characters. If some mysteries will remain, we can only be impatient to discover (finally) the origins of Rey. Besides, who do you think Rey is the descendant of? Reply on 13 December.
