This is a blow to actor Jim Carrey. His latest film, Dark Crimes, has a 0% score on the rating site Rotten Tomatoes. Neither critics nor viewers appreciate this noir thriller.
There are films that are unanimous. Whether they are loved or hated, everyone agrees on the same note. For Black Panther, this rating was around 97%. Unfortunately for Jim Carrey, his latest film is getting more of a negative reaction. All the reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes consecrate Dark Crimes as an absolute turnip. The thriller indeed gets an impressive score of… 0%. No viewer liked this film. Not one. And the criticism published in the press is rather harsh."That this exercise in vulgarity has been done is shameful." says the New York Post. AV Club writes: "A few words need to be said about Carrey's performance: it may be the worst dramatic performance of his career, a charmless caricature of self-repression.The JoBlo site remains sober: "a sinister, boring mess. »
What's next for Jim Carrey?
Such criticism is discouraging. The Chicago Sun Times indicates that the film had all the elements to succeed. The cast includes some big names: Jim Carrey, in the lead role, and Charlotte Gainsbourg are actors appreciated by the American public. The director, the screenwriter and the New Yorker article on which the story is based gave hope for a better result. The LA Times is not entirely defeatist. The critic speculates that Dark Crimes may be a turning point in Jim Carrey's career and give him new opportunities, citing Robin Williams and Photo Obsession as examples.
Dark Crimes tells the story of a Polish policeman who investigates the unsolved murder of a businessman. This murder is very similar to the one described in a novel by Krystov Koslow. The policeman will suspect the writer of having committed the crime. His investigation will lead him into the underbelly of a world where corruption, sex and violence reign supreme.
Dark Crimes premiered in 2016 at the Warsaw International Film Festival. It was released in the United States on May 11, 2018 and is available in France since May 22, 2018, only on video-on-demand platforms.
