«I'm the Happy Horse, horse, horse, so full of love of course of, of course, it's time to be carefree so come with me, Happy!»
– Happy, the blue unicorn.
New York, Christmas is coming. Under the snow and colorful lights, Hailey is kidnapped by a psychopathic Santa Claus. Nick Sax, fallen cop turned hitman meets Happy, the imaginary friend of the one who turns out to be his daughter. In a setting between Sin City and Mom I missed the plane unfolds a story both creepy and comic.
Happy! is a Christmas series for grown-ups. From the first episode the stage is set. Sex, drugs and violence mix with a childish universe that is still innocent. On the one hand, Nick Sax does the dirty job of hitman. On the other a little girl goes to the concert of Sunny Shine, her idol. The two find themselves around a bloodthirsty mafia.
The story itself is not necessarily original. A former cop returns to duty and discovers that he is looking for his own daughter. A scenario that can be found in almost every police series on a Sunday afternoon on TV. What makes Happy! An essential gem is the crazy universe that we discover little by little. Ubuesque characters, rivers of blood, a blue unicorn and humor transgress the rules of a classic scenario.
Characters
Nick Sax, the crazy-looking main character of Jack Nicholson is played by Christopher Meloni. An alcoholic drug addict that death does not want to recover. Comparable to a depraved Superman with an ability to kill superhuman, his debauchery is explained throughout by a troubled past that he keeps rehashing. The originality of Sax lies in his relationship with Happy who plays a role of conscience. Like Jiminy Cricket, still on his shoulder, Happy tries to bring Sax to his senses. Without this relationship Sax would have continued to lead a selfish and lonely life.
The villains of the series are equally complex and inhuman. On the one hand a mafioso, "Blue". Unsympathetic character, boss of the local underworld who makes the hair bristle with his cruelty. "Smoothie" his henchman, perverse and vicious petrifies by his lack of humanism and his thirst for blood. "Bug", the mysterious protagonist is the mastermind of the plot of the whole story. He embodies an abuse of power and endless perversity that disgusts the viewer. On the other, a psychopathic Santa Claus abandoned in a childish delusion. It is scary by its voice, by its pace, by its history. As a traumatized child, he has locked himself into an imaginary world that only he can see.
These villains echo the world of Batman with their disguises and characters. But in Happy!, there is a dose of gore, humor and perversity that is not found in Gotham City.
The atmosphere that reigns during the 8 episodes is catchy. Cliffhangers are mastered at every end. The characters are endearing and all have a well-constructed story. Unique characters are explained which results in rich content. The story itself is fueled by comical, original and funny situations. The SyFy channel that originally broadcasts the series promises a season 2. Season 1 is available now on Netflix.
