Let it be said, the Netflix series Good Girls has not gone unnoticed! Let's take stock of this completely crazy series, between Desperate Housewife and Breaking Bad!
The most thug life moms
Good Girls is the story of three incredible moms, who do their best without it being enough. Beth is a stay-at-home mom of four. She is married to a man who sells cars and clearly doesn't give her the attention she deserves. It is Christina Hendricks, who had been seen in Mad Men, who plays the main role. And it's really nice to see it again on our screens. Mae Whitman plays the role of Annie, a somewhat broke mother who takes care of her daughter Sadie alone. She fights as best she can against Sadie's father and his string of lawyers, who want custody. And finally, there is Ruby, who has to take care of her daughter who is seriously ill and whose treatment is terribly expensive. It is the stand-up actress Retta who interprets this mother ready for anything. If you haven't watched the series yet and your mouth has been made watering, stop there!
Otherwise, let's go for the debrief of this first season.
Housewives revisited
In view of their many money worries, our three mothers decide to rob a supermarket to fill a little financial nothingness. They will still rob a supermarket with only children's guns as weapons. The plans are meticulously drawn up, (there would even be a little Professor side of La Casa Del Papel!) Joking aside, we noticed (and you too are sure) that the circle was closed with this series: it begins with the robbery of the supermarket and ends with the robbery of the same supermarket. In the meantime, the evolution of the characters is really captivating. Beth is completely reminiscent of Walter White's behavior and actions in Breaking Bad. We clearly see her turn into a little gansta and that's how we like her. Already in Mad Men, Johan Harris showed a lot of ambition, but legally! Christina Hendricks is truly made for strong, powerful and independent female roles. Beth clearly becomes the leader of her small business. Not to mention the mystery shopper system, which works wonderfully (before it messed up). Again, there is an interesting parallel to Breaking Bad, where Walter and Jessie ended up hiring a team.
Rio and Beth
Let it be said: during this first season, there was a slight ambiguity between Rio and Beth. The crime lord and the rising star of business are opposed, but on several occasions, a spark seemed to be born between them. However, given that Beth organized a robbery to ensure the incarceration of Rio, we are a little worried about the good relations between these two. Especially since Rio is patiently waiting at Beth's house, Dean at her side, his face swollen. Then? What's next for our two gangsters? We can imagine that Beth will manage to put Rio in her pocket, without having to use the gun she holds firmly in her hand during the last seconds of the series. Where then it's going to be real carnage and Beth is going to kill Rio, with their semblance of a budding relationship.
Feminism and the relationship to money
This series also raises concerns about sexism and recurring discrimination on a daily basis. For example, Ruby is really abused by a young person when she is still working as a waitress. A scene that sends shivers down our spine. Besides that, Ruby remains strong and independent, even if it means losing her job. She educates her daughter with very strong values of independence and equality. We also find everyday sexism in the scene where Beth buys a necklace. The saleswoman offers to put it aside for her husband to come and pay him. At that moment, Beth's gaze changes and she answers frankly, that her husband does not have the means but that she, does. Let's also remember that Annie was almost raped by her co-worker, before she beat him up with her life, accompanied by her sister. So many important and difficult themes to deal with. It can be said, these three actresses represent feminist struggles, but also against all forms of discrimination. They are women seeking independence and they get it. They are immensely inspiring and we are really looking forward to seeing them again in a season 2.
Once again, Netflix has saved the day for a new series! The numbers on TV were not very promising, but those on the platform made it possible to officially announce season 2! So we're looking forward to it for 2019, are you?
