C'est du gâteau, the parody show of cooking competitions, returns for a season 2. Netflix continues to broadcast the hilarious series with this time, 7 new episodes, crazy recipes and bitter failures.
The program has understood its success and continues with cakes more and more difficult to make: the goal is to have spectacular and therefore funny failures. The more the creations collapse and are ugly, the more we laugh. We end up with particularly comical moments like when a candidate confuses sugar with salt.
The show is the opposite of grandiose baking shows like Sugar Rush and Zumbo's Just Desserts. We are far from sanitized cooking shows. Here everything is messy and that's what makes the charm of the program! The goal is not to have a fierce competition between candidates, but to have a fun time.
A funny and crazy presenter
Nicole Byers is the brilliant conductor of this merry mess. She gives a frantic pace to the episodes with punchy jokes and boundless energy. She is the main show of the show and knows how to fill all the flat moments to give an entertaining show.
She is accompanied by Jacques Torres, a French chocolatier with a strong accent who brings folklore and expertise to the show. He is also responsible for explaining the mistakes that candidates make and how to make the right gestures. It brings an educational side without too much heaviness.
Each episode is also an opportunity to bring in a special jury. In this season, the goal is to have people from different universes to judge the candidates: everyone is welcome! There are comedians and sportsmen in addition to pastry specialists. The goal is to open up pastry a little more to other environments and make it more accessible.
Failure as a star of the show
The show is shot with derision and a completely offbeat humor. Everything is done to put pressure on candidates to fail miserably. The surprise is when some manage to produce something relatively correct.
What is also impressive is the candidates' ability to improvise when they are blocked or caught up in time. This series is made for all those who want to be reassured of their talents in the kitchen by comparing themselves to these average candidates.
The production also plays on themes for each episode. For example, there are achievements on the theme of American football. Everything is done to maintain the interest of the viewer, each cake is part of a great theme and offers a different pastry technique.
Queer Eye as a guest star
Special mention for the bonus which is a short episode with candidates, the presenters of Queer Eye. The five acolytes must reproduce a cupcake in their image. The whole episode, which is only 11 minutes long, is hilarious. Today's contestants pretend to be in a fierce competition, all with a lot of humor.
The episodes are therefore very well constructed with a quick editing, a stopwatch that structures the events and especially a sometimes exaggerated staging that makes the show even funnier: the cakes are exposed with lights and smoke to make the whole thing spectacular.
Half of the season is also marked by a special Christmas episode where contestants must reproduce a gingerbread house. It's a way to introduce the next season.
Indeed, Netflix has already planned to broadcast on December 7, a special Christmas edition of It's cake! This promises culinary failures and laughter in perspective, all with holiday pastries!
