Stop everything! The Last of Us will finally have the right to its adaptation! Even better: it will be managed by the creator of Chernobyl, who will make the multi-award-winning game a series for HBO. Enough to make fans of the license salivate abundantly. The adaptation of the cult video game was a real way of the cross. Initially thought of as a film, this one had finally not been made. However, we could console ourselves with the excellent Logan, whose story had many similarities with the game.
The perfect showrunner?
The difficulty when adapting such an iconic work is to find the perfect person to carry out the project. And HBO seems to have made the wisest choice by appointing Craig Mazin, the creator of the series Chernobyl (which became instantly cult). Recall that this series had been acclaimed for its striking realism, both by the public and by the critics. The choice seems all the more logical when you consider the dark and raw universe of the game, perfectly sticking to Mazin's work on his previous series. And when you consider how important character work is in The Last of Us, it seems that Craig Mazin is, again, the perfect person to adapt this post-apocalyptic universe. Recall that Chernobyl had been acclaimed (among other things) for the representation of its characters (everyday heroes having sacrificed their lives to minimize the disaster). This is of course without counting on the quality of production of HBO, whose reputation is well established regarding series.
Neil Druckmann: the icing on the cake!
Yes, I did. The creator of the game will also be there, in collaboration with Craig Mazin. What more could you ask for?
"Neil Druckmann is without a doubt the most gifted screenwriter in video games and The Last of Us is his masterpiece"
So said Craig Mazin about Neil. The latter was not stingy with compliments either:
"When I first sat down to chat with Craig, I was blown away by his approach to storytelling as well as his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us." "I couldn't hope for better partners"
So we have a winning combo for this series adaptation. It remains to be seen which actors will be cast as Joel and Ellie, on whom the story should focus. Because if they have to be interpreted by new actors, they may be expected at the turn (perhaps even more than Henry Cavill was for The Witcher). No date is yet set for The Last of Us series, but impatient fans will be able to console themselves on May 29 with the release of The Last of Us II on console. This second part of the adventures of Joel and Ellie has been awaited for many years and is likely to be a new hit for the publisher Naughty Dog.
